Biographers and students of Garcilaso de la Vega, el Inca, have often found it difficult to explain 'the frequent intervals during which his literary .output was interrupted.* One of these occurred during the year 1588. It is our contention that Garcilaso formed part of the Spanish Armada, since his name appears both in the Spanish and English roster of participants thereto. Documents show that he was a captain and that he used the name Garcilaso de la Vega for his official signature.' Porras Berenechea admits to the possibility of a prolonged absence in his statement: En se notan ya ausencias prolongadas en la segunda parte del aiio y solo aparece incidentalmente en Montilla en Agosto de 1589.2 In the Relacion Verdadera del Armada, que el Rey Don Felipe, nuestro Sefior mando juntar en el puerto de la ciudad de Lisboa en el Reyno de Portugal el afio de 1588 is listed the name of Garcilaso de la Vega under Tertio de Don Agustin Mexia. The dates of departure are indicated, as follows: Que comengo a salir del Puerto a los veinte y nueve de Mayo, y acabo de salir a los treynta, y se hizo a la vela, que Nuestro Sefior la encamine en su Santo
