Among Gald6s' novels, Marianela is distinguished by its sentimental and idyllic tone. Menendez y Pelayo called Marianela menos original tuiz4a que otras cosas de P*rez Gald6s, pero mis portico y delicado, and, like Manuel de la Revilla and Clarin, saw in it el reflejo del episodio de Mignon en Wilhelm Meister, and also aquel procedimiento antit6tico familiar a Victor Hugo .. . Revilla had suggested as a possible influence Hugo's L'Homme qui Rit, and more recently, Walter T. Pattison has proposed Les Miserables and Sue's Le Juif Errant.2 But listed among Gald6s' books in Santander3-and not uncut-there is a small collection of stories, Contes de la Veillee, by the French Romanticist Charles Nodier, one of which, Les Aveugles de Chamouny, bears a much closer resemblance to Maria
