A director of a January term in Spain presents the rationale associated with the design of a set of activities that combine cultural understanding and language practice in Spanish courses at three different levels in their study-abroad program. Specific activities that stimulate the use of the target language during a brief study-abroad experience as well as a deeper understanding of the host culture are described. The activities include journaling, debriefing, thematic articulation, and the use of web-delivered writing exercises
