demonstrated in his portrayal of his characters.' Gald6s' conception of man, as witnessed his character portrayals, has proved to be an enduring one. His characters have a universal interest. My purpose in this study is to illuminate some of the factors contributing to the universality of don Benito's characters. My method is to examine two representative characters against the background of Freudian psychoanalysis and humanistic psychology.2 The former originated around the turn of the century, the latter is a development of the last twenty years
