El artículo examina, desde la perspectiva de la historia intelectual, el análisis del proceso de laicidad en el siglo XIX iberoamericano, y su lectura en clave escatológica desde algunos sectores de la intelectualidad católica. El texto argumenta que este pensamiento escatológico debe ser estudiado más allá de sus dimensiones teológicas, sino también como una forma particular de leer apocalípticamente los cambios sociales y culturales que la modernidad política implicó para la religión y su lugar en el espacio público en el siglo XIX
