This edited volume of selected papers and other writings by the late Sir Michael Howard, produced by The International Institute of Strategic Studies (IISS), was available as a ‘celebration of his life and work’ at the memorial service held at King's College London in November 2019 (p. 7). The venue was entirely appropriate, as it was there that Sir Michael was appointed to a lectureship in the Department of History in 1954, followed by an independent readership in 1961, and that he established the Department of War Studies and was promoted to a professorial chair in 1963. Thereafter, he held three more chairs––two at Oxford and finally one at Yale University. Indeed, readers might be well advised to read Howard's superb autobiography––Captain professor (London and New York: Continuum, 2006)––as an invaluable supplement to the volume of papers under review. That work provides both a personal and a professional context
