It is rare to find a book that sees international law for what it is—the source of misery and injustice. In this book, John Linarelli, Margot E. Salomon and Muthucumaraswamy Sornarajah excavate the system of international economic law to show how international investment law, international trade law, human rights law and the burgeoning field of international financial law—aided and abetted by private interests—have been a source of devastation. The problems, they argue, are that investment law is full of vested interests and is protected by international law; international trade regulation is full of dichotomies, such as the right to trade and the right to regulate; the international financial architecture perpetuates injustice through banks and sovereign debt; and ‘the enfranchising capacity of human rights is subverted by the interests of global capitalism’ (p. 240). At the heart of the book is the morality of international law and its inability to render or support justice. For the authors, the book is about international law's ‘natural hegemony’ relating to the global economic system where the regimes of trade, investment, finance and human rights are abettors of hardship
