to-indeed established by-the nationalist movement, became more commercially oriented and more independent and critical.The authors' sketchy account of this transformation reinforces the view that the Afrikaans press (and the interests behind it) played a vital role in defending the significant remnants of press freedom that remain.This was not, as is often claimed, simply the result of a public relations exercise for external consumption.Another important question which the authors raise but do not explore is the impact on the economics of publishing, and on editorial policy, of the growing importance of blacks, both as readers and as journalists.The relations of black journalists with their white colleagues on the English papers would make a fascinating case-study of the strained relationship between the black intelligentsia and white liberals.Black journalists rejected the establishment of a single non-racial union, insisting on their own racially exclusive union.Similarly, black authors refused to serve on PEN with white liberals like Nadine Gordimer, and this led to the disbanding of South African PEN.Unless this is a transient phase, it is an ominous portent for the future.So too is the deteriorating security situation: as Hachten and Giffard argue, this will make it increasingly difficult for the press to defend the narrow but significant area of freedom that has, surprisingly, been preserved
