Lawrence Freedman, the virtuoso strategist, returns to the stage with this short book. He applies his deep understanding of strategic concepts and clear thinking to the war still going on in Ukraine, five years after its start. But while his lucidity is impressive, there are too many duff notes. He is not sufficiently familiar with this part of the repertoire. He explains that the book grew out of three articles. ‘I was curious as to whether the body of strategic theory I had recently been studying, especially those elements developed during the Cold War, could help illuminate the conflict and suggest how it might work out’ (p. 5). The book begins with a chapter describing the key strategic concepts emerging out of the Cold War and their potential relevance for Ukraine, before considering the strategic decision-making as the conflict developed, and then returning to see what this case-study might suggest about the practice of strategy
