India has been subjected to claims and counter-claims regarding its rise, its emergence, the potential it has and the stature it seeks. The sheer size of the country and occasional assertion of power by India make it an entity that could hardly be overlooked. The book under review engages with problems and remedies in and around India's political economy by assessing its history, by analysing the present and by providing a roadmap for realizing its potential in future. The book is divided into five parts. The introductory section aptly ‘sets the stage’ and includes the economic history of independent India. It further examines the role of the state and the market with regard to economic development from 1947 to today. The second part engages with the challenges that the country faces in its pursuit of achieving rapid growth. It begins by examining the drivers of capital accumulation in India and continues with a discussion of the ‘employment problem’ (pp. 65–8). The author offers as remedy the argument that the ‘demographic dividend’ can promote growth. Other chapters in part two engage with the problems—and solutions—related to productivity, ownership, infrastructure and environmental sustainability
