The spread of entrepreneurship (in the form of entrepreneurial inclinations and as actual entrepreneurship) is an important aspect of transition in today’s Serbia. After a short description of the institutional setting and the actual process of transformation of former “social (state) firms” the paper presents survey findings on the entrepreneurial inclinations of the Serbian population in 1991 and 1994. Included are findings on the inclinations of various social segments, as well as comments on factors affecting these inclinations. The final section of the paper presents data on the main characteristics of new entrepreneurs, based on the results of the 1992 survey study of a sample of 373 private entrepreneurs. Some of the findings were compared with similar data for Hungary
