This article analyzes the controversial relationship between theory and practice in social work and its positivist divorce and forced unity which reduces theory to an ‘instrumental-operational’ knowledge. The objective of this article is to contribute towards overcoming the positivistic rationality approach toward the theory and practice relationship. Based on a critical perspective, the author presents proposals to overcome some limitations of the conservative theory and practice approach
