In the 1960s and 1970s, a number of new themes began to appear in the work of sociologists of development. Old paradigms came under fire and new ones were offered as more accurate conceptualizations of development. These new frameworks, exemplified in the “dependency” approach, suggested new ways of looking at the relationship between the developed and developing states, as well as at new problems facing the late developing states. But in spite of these new perceptions, many basic theoretical questions, like the role of culture in development, remain unclarified. An elaboration of these questions is offered here with an eye toward a theoretical reconceptualization of their place in the sociology of development
