"Why should we have to eat the chicken's butt?" - Everyday consumption, deservingness and inclusion in rural Hungary
The article explores the links between consumption, deservingness and social inclusion through an analysis of the spending practices of the 'unemployed poor' in rural Hungary. After the 2008 economic crisis, the offering of informal credit by shopkeepers became a widespread practice in the studied village, allowing unemployed people to buy goods that were otherwise out of their reach. Creating the State Locally through Welfare Provision
This article examines the ways in which decentralized welfare provision is utilized by local state officials, particularly mayors, to (re)create local belonging along notions of deservingness. Comparing the organization of three forms of benefits in two villages, we demonstrate that local practices of welfare embody different state images that are created and negotiated both through the regulatory power of local state actors and through their var…

First, while much of the recent literature on new forms of citizenship has focused on the diversity of large cities and new forms of migration, we seek to establish rural sites as important arenas for negotiating citizenship.
