The study of conflict and diversity within groups, ranging from small workgroups to multinational organizations, has become an increasingly important focus for contemporary research. A key question is how the inevitable social diversity within groups can be developed as a productive asset rather than becoming a source of conflict and prejudice. The aim of this Special Issue of the journal is to report cutting edge empirical and theoretical work t…

  • When Both Similarities and Dissimilarities Matter

    Open Access•Anne S Tsui, Lyman W Porter et al.•ARTICLE•Human Relations•2002•Cited by: 41•References: 38

The current study extends the concept of relational demography by considering both demographic similarities and demographic dissimilarities in supervisor-subordinate dyads. We further examined the effects of relational demography on both basic task performance and extra-role behaviors of the subordinates. We propose that demographic similarity, which engenders attraction, will be associated with extra-role behavior but not with basic task perform…

This paper reports findings from an exploratory study that addresses the question of whether or not measures of perceptual ‘gaps’ in organizational inducements contribute unique explanatory power above and beyond such familiar measures as employee job attitudes. Perceptions of inducements were obtained from both employees and representatives of their organizations. An average of 12 executives responded for each of four organizations to provide th…

A longitudinal study was made across a 10 1/2 month period, with attitude measures collected at four points in time. For this sample, job satisfaction measures appeared better able to differentiate future stayers from leavers in the earliest phase of the study.…

  • Organizational Theory and Organizational Communication

    Open Access•Karlene H Roberts, Charles A O’reilly et al.•ARTICLE•Human Relations•1974•Cited by: 9•References: 31

Researchers frequently confound communication in organizations with a host of other phenomena such as leadership and control. With no adequate theories of organizational communication, existing relevant research remains unintegrated. The purpose of the paper is to ask how organizational theories might aid in developing future organizational communication research and improved theories. Some of the different approaches to organizational theory are…

  • The role of task-goal attributes in employee performance

Richard M Steers, Renae Steers et al.•ARTICLE•Psychological Bulletin•1974•Cited by: 14

While many studies have demonstrated the relatively successful performance implications of formalized goal-setting programs in organizations, these findings typically do not identify the specific factors behind such techniques which are largely responsible for their success. The six 'task goal attributes' are: goal specificity; participation in goal-setting; feedback; peer competition; goal difficulty; and goal acceptance. While goal specificity …

This is a preliminary report of data. More exhaustive analysis will appear later. Meanwhile, some general findings emerge: 1. One cannot help but be struck by the consistent groupings of countries through all three parts of the study. Not only is the grouping consistent, but it tends to follow ethnic lines rather than level of industrialization. 2. The pattern of uniformity and diversity in the data is also striking. It seems possible to identify…
