Sign languages of the Soviet Union
Many signing communities in countries that once formed part of the Soviet Union share a common deaf institutional history. The sign languages of these communities have been influenced by Russian Sign Language, which was taught and used to varying degrees in Soviet deaf schools. However, little is known about the linguistic histories of the sign languages of the Soviet Union or of the histories of the signing communities within which those languag…
Classifier handshape choice in Russian Sign Language and Sign Language of the Netherlands
Classifier predicates, also known as depictive verbs, are complex signs used to describe motion or localization events in sign languages. Every component of the classifier predicate bears its own meaning: the handshape refers to the semantic class of the referent (e.g., human, car, a round object, etc.), while the trajectory of the motion, its manner and the localization of the sign iconically represent the described event. In this exploratory st…
Argument Structure in Sign Languages
Although sign languages are crucial for research on the human linguistic capacity, argument structure in these languages is rarely addressed in theoretical and typological studies. This article provides an overview of existing research on argument structure and argument structure alternations in sign languages. It demonstrates that there are many fundamental similarities between the two modalities in the domain of argument structure, such as the …
Argument structure of classifier predicates in Russian Sign Language
We analyze classifier predicates in Russian Sign Language (RSL) using a combination of naturalistic corpus and elicited data in order to determine their argument structure, and to test the generalization, based on research on other sign languages, that there is a clear relation between argument structure and classifier type (Benedicto and Brentari 2004). We propose that whole-entity classifier predicates are intransitive unaccusative, and that bo…
Transitivity prominence within and across modalities
We investigate transitivity prominence of verbs across signed and spoken languages, based on data from both valency dictionaries and corpora. Our methodology relies on the assumption that dictionary data and corpus-based measures of transitivity are comparable, and we find evidence in support of this through the direct comparison of these two types of data across several spoken languages. For the signed modality, we measure the transitivity promi…
Argument Structure of Classifier Predicates
We analyze argument structure of whole-entity and handling classifier predicates in four sign languages (Russian Sign Language, Sign Language of the Netherlands, German Sign Language, and Kata Kolok) using parallel datasets (retellings of the Canary Row cartoons). We find that all four languages display a systematic, or canonical, mapping between classifier type and argument structure, as previously established for several sign languages: whole-e…

Towards a Classification of Weak Hand Holds
The two symmetrical manual articulators (the hands) in signed languages are a striking modalityspecific phonetic property. The weak hand can maintain the end position of an articulation while the other articulator continues to produce additional signs. This weak hand spreading (hold) has been analysed from various perspectives, highlighting its prosodic, syntactic, or discourse properties. The present study investigates corpus data from Sign Lang…
