This article examines the role of Colombian universities as institutional providers of fee-based test-preparatory courses for the Saber 11 examination, the national high-stakes upper-secondary exit exam used for admission to higher education. Previous work has not yet comparatively studied which forms of peace education (PE) have been adopted in national laws. Through content analysis of policy documents, we seek to find out why the Colombian Congress established PE as mandatory content across all educational levels in 2014 in a postwar phase, while the German Standing Conference of Ministers of Education rejected attempts to implement PE since the Cold War. School choice, institutional environments and the precarisation of teachers’ working conditions in not-for-profit charter schools
This article explores the effects of charter schools on teachers’ working conditions in Bogota (Colombia). By employing a semi-experimental approach involving Propensity Score Matching (PSM) and Difference-in-Differences (DID), we find that in the close vicinity (postcode area) of where they are established, charter schools more than double teachers’ workload for a comparatively small increase in salaries. The worldwide spread of peace education
To investigate the spread of peace education (PE), we examined 685 documents in SCOPUS between 1970 and 2018 in 70 countries and triangulated the information with 11369 news articles and 22 international organisationś founding dates. PE emerged in scientific databases in the 1970s, lost momentum in 1990 and then globalised after 2003. The educational agenda of indigenous groups is in tension with the expansion of schooling. The authors follow an ethnographic approach to analyse an educational programme that seeks to preserve indigenous knowledges in a megacity. The initiative promotes daily activities with the communities’ native educational counsellor called apoyo pedagógico and the supervision of the sabedor (wiseman).
