A Newly Discovered Tablet‐Making Facility in Nineveh
This paper addresses the question of tablet technology in the Neo‐Assyrian capital city of Nineveh. Recent excavations in the lower town of Nineveh by the Iraqi–Italian Archaeological Expedition uncovered an exceptional assemblage of more than 200 tablets from an elite residence that appears to have included a scriptorium. The British Museum’s archaeological explorations at Karkemish, 1876-1914, in the context of British foreign policy
This paper seeks to provide a new perspective on the context within which the excavations conducted at the site of ancient Karkemish up to World War I were first conceived and then developed. It draws mostly on unpublished documents kept in the British Museum and elsewhere in Great Britain, which were studied in the course of several research visits and are presented here through selected excerpts

The top part of the famous basalt stele of Kubaba from Karkemish, made by Kamani around 790 BC, was discovered in 2015. This allows for a new discussion of the development of the iconography of the goddess. The stele completes the genealogy of the Karkemish rulers from the 9th century BC and includes the first mention of Sangara in hieroglyphic writing.
