Prevalence and Demographic Correlates of Rough Sex Behaviors Among Adolescents Ages 14 to 17
Introduction Sexual practices commonly described as “rough sex” (e.g., choking, slapping) have become prevalent among young adults in the U.S. and internationally. Little is known about adolescents’ engagement in such behaviors. Using U.S. population data, we examined the prevalence and demographic correlates of rough sex behaviors among U.S. adolescents ages 14- to 17- years old. Method Data are from a confidential online U.S. nationally represe…
Prevalence and Demographic Correlates of “Rough Sex” Behaviors
Rough sex behaviors have become prevalent among young adults in the U.S. and internationally. However, little is known about these behaviors at the population level. Using nationally representative survey data of 9029 U.S. adults, we aimed to provide population estimates and demographic correlates of 10 such behaviors: consensual and nonconsensual hair pulling, biting, face slapping, genital slapping, light spanking, hard spanking, choking, punch…
Monitoring Gait Complexity as an Indicator for Running-Related Injury Risk in Collegiate Cross-Country Runners
Dynamical systems theory suggests that studying the complexity of biological signals could lead to a single gait metric that reliably predicts risk of running-related injury (RRI). The purposes of this pilot study were to examine center of mass (COM) acceleration complexity at baseline, prior to RRI, and the change between timepoints between collegiate runners who developed RRI during a competitive season and those who remained uninjured, and to …
Public Acceptability in the UK and USA of Nudging to Reduce Obesity
BACKGROUND: "Nudging"-modifying environments to change people's behavior, often without their conscious awareness-can improve health, but public acceptability of nudging is largely unknown. METHODS: We compared acceptability, in the United Kingdom (UK) and the United States of America (USA), of government interventions to reduce consumption of sugar-sweetened beverages. Three nudge interventions were assessed: i. reducing portion Size, ii. changi…
Syphilis Testing in Association With Gonorrhea/Chlamydia Testing During a Syphilis Outbreak
We used an electronic medical records system retrospectively to evaluate how frequently, in a public hospital and its clinics, combined gonorrhea/chlamydia tests were accompanied by a syphilis test before and during a syphilis outbreak. Among 70 330 gonorrhea/chlamydia tests (1996–2000), the proportion with a syphilis test increased from 13% (preoutbreak) to 50% (intervention period) for men and from 6% to 13% for nonpregnant women. The increased…
Condom Use as a Function of Time in New and Established Adolescent Sexual Relationships
Objectives. This study sought to describe condom use over time in new and established adolescent relationships. Methods. The outcome variable was time (in days) until first unprotected coital event. Analyses involved comparisons of Kaplan–Meier survival curves and Cox proportional hazards models. Results. Survival functions for the 2 relationship groups were significantly different. However, by 21 days the curves had converged: 43% of new and 41%…
