  • Education and Cohabitation in Britain

    Open Access•Máire Ní Bhrolcháin, Éva Beaujouan•ARTICLE•Population and Development Review•2013•Cited by: 18•References: 60

Cohabitation is sometimes thought of as being inversely associated with education, but in Britain a more complex picture emerges. Educational group differences in cohabitation vary by age, time period, cohort, and indicator used. Well-educated women pioneered cohabitation in Britain in the 1970s and 1980s. In the most recent cohorts, however, the less educated have exceeded the best educated in the proportions ever having cohabited at young ages.…

  • Fertility postponement is largely due to rising educational enrolment

    Máire Ní Bhrolcháin, Éva Beaujouan•ARTICLE•Population Studies•2012•Cited by: 95•References: 57

The rise in educational enrolment is often cited as a possible cause of the trend to later childbearing in developed societies but direct evidence of its contribution to the aggregate change in fertility tempo is scarce. We show that rising enrolment, resulting in later ages at the end of education, accounts for a substantial part of the upward shift in the mean age at first birth in the 1980s and 1990s in Britain and in France. The postponement …

  • Tempo and the TFR

    Open Access•Máire Ní Bhrolcháin•ARTICLE•Demography•2011•Cited by: 16•References: 57

Tempo effects in period fertility indicators are widely regarded as a source of bias or distortion. But is this always the case? Whether tempo change results in bias depends, in the view advanced here, on the measure used, the meaning of bias/distortion, and the objective of analysis. Two ways of construing bias in period measures are suggested, and their relevance is discussed in the context of five broad purposes for measuring period fertility:…

  • Sources of error in reported childlessness in a continuous British household survey

Máire Ní Bhrolcháin, Éva Beaujouan et al.•ARTICLE•Population Studies•2011•Cited by: 15•References: 14

A recent investigation of the British General Household Survey (GHS) found substantial over-reporting of childlessness in recent years, particularly at older ages. We examine the phenomenon in further detail and find that the principal cause was change in survey procedures. To some extent the bias can be corrected for by using information on own children in the household. Revised fertility histories give period estimates of total fertility that a…

  • Demographic Decomposition of the Marriage Market in England and Wales 1911–1991

    Open Access•Máire Ní Bhrolcháin•ARTICLE•Journal of Biosocial Science•2008

A method for decomposing partner availability into its demographic components (preferences, previous birth trends, migration and mortality, and structure by marital status) is presented and applied to marriage market estimates for selected census years 1911–91 in England and Wales. Preferences are a key component at the youngest ages. The role of other factors varies by age and time period. Contrary to widespread assumption, variation in cohort s…

Open Access•Máire Ní Bhrolcháin, Wendy Sigle•ARTICLE•Population (English Edition•2005•Cited by: 3

Marriage market estimates by sex and age are made for the US and England and Wales in 1990-91, using explicit data on age preferences. Availability is strongly differentiated by age and sex; it decreases with age for women, while the opposite is true for men. Decomposition shows that young women are advantaged largely by age preferences while older men are advantaged by population age-sex and marital status structure. Most men marry at ages when …

Máire Ní Bhrolcháin•ARTICLE•Population and Development Review•1992•Cited by: 57

The aim of this discussion of cohort and period fertility estimation was to clarify the issue and resolve the conflict between 2 approaches. The typical view of these approaches is that fluctuations in period fertility represented in the total fertility rate (TFR) are due to the timing and pace of cohort fertility; these TFR changes distort. TFR appears high when the pace of cohort fertility increases. This tempo component of fertility must be re…

    Open Access•George W Brown, Máire Ní Bhrolcháin et al.•ARTICLE•Sociology•1975•Cited by: 76•References: 7

While an association between social status and prevalence of psychiatric disurbance has often been reported, little has been established about aetiology or its significance for social class differences. In a survey of a random sample of women living in south London a large class difference in the prevalence of psychiatric disturbance was found. This difference is particularly great among women with young children at home. This paper examines why …

    Open Access•Máire Ní Bhrolcháin•ARTICLE•Journal of Biosocial Science•1985

Some hypotheses regarding birth spacing and women's work are outlined. Using British census and survey data it is shown that average second and third birth intervals were shorter in marriages taking place in the 10 years following the Second World War as compared with marriages in the period 1900–29; the intervals increased again, measured on a period basis, in the 1970s. Birth intervals for women married during the 10 years after the war were sh…
