The Deployment and Use of Social Robots for Home-Based Healthcare
Given the increasing challenges in today’s healthcare landscape, the role of health promotion and care delivery in home settings is gaining importance. Social robots have emerged as promising tools to support this shift, offering assistance, motivation, and companionship to patients and caregivers. However, their integration into home-based healthcare remains limited. To understand the underlying reasons, this study systematically reviews the lit…
Residents’ views on health and well-being in their neighborhoods
To meet current and future healthcare challenges, more preventive and health-promoting efforts targeting people’s social and physical living environments need to be made. The neighborhood is a key setting for the fostering of health and well-being, especially for residents in vulnerable circumstances. To be successful, neighborhood interventions must meet the wishes and needs of these residents. Thus, gaining insight into their perspectives is cr…
Dealing with diversity
As many cities in Western countries undergo profound demographic transformations, the impact of superdiversity on the well-being of native populations, particularly older adults, remains underexplored. This study employs Q-methodology to unveil three distinct viewpoints among native-Dutch urban-dwelling older adults (≥ 65 years) regarding neighborhood characteristics crucial for well-being. Analyzing responses from 28 participants, revealed diver…
Exploring the Potential of Spherical Robots to Promote Physical Activity at Home
Social robots have become increasingly prominent in the realm of physical activity promotion. However, the technological complexity and primarily anthropomorphic designs of these robots pose challenges for their application in everyday settings. This study positions spherical robots as an emerging subtype of social robots and explores their potential to promote physical activity at home by identifying useful behavioral design patterns. To this en…

Validating the full and short versions of the aging-in-place instrument for native and migrant older adults in the Netherlands
The main premise of age-friendly environment development is to accommodate for the needs of diverse older-adult populations, which necessitates the availability of valid instruments that capture older adults' perceptions of their environments and reflect their aging-in-place needs. Most available instruments for age-friendliness measurement are homogeneous and not culturally adapted for use with diverse older-adult groups. This study was performe…
Perceived weight stigma in healthcare settings among adults living with obesity
INTRODUCTION: Patients living with obesity often experience weight stigma in healthcare settings, which has worrying consequences for their healthcare experiences. This cross-sectional study aimed to: (1) provide an overview of stigmatising experiences in healthcare settings reported by adults living with varying classes of obesity, (2) identify associations among patient characteristics and perceived weight stigma and (3) investigate the associa…
Measuring the Realisation of Well-Being Needs of Adolescents
Adolescent well-being is increasingly scrutinized due to its decline. This study was conducted to validate a theory-driven instrument for the measurement of well-being needs with a sample of Dutch adolescents. The short (15-item) Social Production Function Instrument for the Level of well-being (SPF-ILs) measures whether a person’s needs for stimulation, comfort, behavioural confirmation, affection and status are met. In this study, its psychomet…
Growing old outside of one's home country
Due to the rapid aging of the population, policymakers and service providers are becoming more cognizant of the significance of creating and sustaining communities that are friendly to all age groups. We lack an understanding of how older natives and immigrants in the Netherlands perceive the age-friendliness of their communities and whether and how age-friendly communities contribute to these populations' overall well-being. In this study Q meth…
Views of older Surinamese adults in the Netherlands about neighbourhood age-friendliness and well-being realisation
In the western world, the ageing population is becoming more ethnically diverse. Research has shown the importance of physical and social neighbourhood resources for the well-being realisation of older adults. However, the relative importance of neighbourhood resources for the well-being realisation of older Surinamese adults remains unknown. We conducted a Q-methodology study in April–July 2022 to capture the variety of viewpoints of older adult…
Are neighbourhoods age-friendly? Experiences of older Surinamese adults in the Netherlands during the Covid-19 pandemic
Older Surinamese adults in the Netherlands have been disproportionately affected by COVID-19. The ability to provide support in response to older adults’ needs contributes to the age-friendliness of neighbourhoods and may be especially important during public health emergencies such as a pandemic. In this study, older Surinamese adults’ experience of neighbourhood age-friendliness, as indicator of a vital city, in general and during the COVID-19 …
Views of patients with obesity on person‐centred care
INTRODUCTION: To better accommodate patients with obesity, the adoption of a person-centred approach to healthcare seems to be imperative. Eight dimensions are important for person-centred care (PCC): respect for patients' preferences, physical comfort, the coordination of care, emotional support, access to care, the continuity of care, the provision of information and education, and the involvement of family and friends. The aim of this study wa…
Health behaviours and well-being among older adults with a Surinamese migration background in the Netherlands
This study suggests that next to traditional health behaviours also social activity is an essential health behaviour for the well-being of older Surinamese adults. Research about health promotion should expand its focus by including social activity as health behaviour
Associations of Social Cohesion and Socioeconomic Status with Health Behaviours among Middle-Aged and Older Chinese People
Background : An understanding of factors associated with health behaviours is critical for the design of appropriate health promotion programmes. Important influences of social cohesion, education, and income on people's health behaviours have been recognised in Western countries. However, little is known about these influences in the older Chinese population. Objective : To investigate associations of social cohesion and socioeconomic status (SE…
Easier Said Than Done
Patient-centered care (PCC) has the potential to entail tailored primary care delivery according to the needs of patients with multimorbidity (two or more co-existing chronic conditions). To make primary care for these patients more patient centered, insight on healthcare professionals' perceived PCC implementation barriers is needed. In this study, healthcare professionals' perceived barriers to primary PCC delivery to patients with multimorbidi…
The benefits of person centered care for professionals, patients and informal caregivers
An introduction There is a significant challenge facing our healthcare systems and a shift in focus is required from ‘clinical’ health related outcomes only to overall wellbeing. This calls for patient centered care (PCC) and co-creation of care. PCC is a core component of integrated care. Although we agree this shift is needed we are still unclear what effective PCC looks like in practice and how to measure it.After this session, participants wi…
The longitudinal relationship between income and social participation among Chinese older people
The vital role of active social participation in older people's lives is widely acknowledged. The maintenance of adequate levels of social participation is an essential element of successful aging. Low income may inhibit older people from engaging in social activities. Given its recent rapid economic growth, China provides a unique setting for the study of changes in income and social participation among older people over time. In this study, the…
The Need for Co-Creation of Care with Multi-Morbidity Patients—A Longitudinal Perspective

Delays in presenting for tuberculosis treatment associated with fear of learning one is HIV-positive
A cornerstone of tuberculosis (TB) control is early diagnosis and treatment. The first hurdle that prospective TB patients must overcome is to present at a public health clinic for treatment. The Global Plan to Stop TB addresses the new challenges of the intersecting epidemics of TB and HIV, and it aims to cut the transmission chain by achieving early and effective treatment of all people with TB infection. This goal may be more difficult to achi…
The relationship between (stigmatizing) views and lay public preferences regarding tuberculosis treatment in the Eastern Cape, South Africa
These results showed that two varying views related to visibility factors that expose patients to stigmatization (one characterized by TB stigma, the other by the view that TB patients should queue with other chronically ill patients) are associated with opposing attitudes and preferences towards TB treatment. These opposing attitudes complicate treatment outcomes, and suggest that complex behaviors must be taken into account when designing healt…
The influence of social capital and socio-economic conditions on self-rated health among residents of an economically and health-deprived South African township
We highlight the possible impacts of social capital, employment, and education on health, and suggest that health outcomes may be improved through interventions beyond the health system: creating job opportunities, strengthening social capital, bettering educational systems, and promoting educational access. Policymakers should consider the benefits of such programmes when addressing health outcomes in financially distressed districts
