  • Dietary diversity and the triple burden of malnutrition among children aged 6–23 months in 62 low- and middle-income countries

Open Access•Xinli Song, Qian Chen et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Global Health•2026

Background: The 2021 World Health Organization and United Nations Children's Fund definition of minimum dietary diversity (MDD) includes breast milk as an eighth food group. However, cross-country evidence under this revised definition remains limited. We estimated MDD achievement among children in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs) and examined its associations with anaemia, stunting, underweight, and overweight/obesity (OWOB). Methods: We…

  • Patrons as intermediary executives

    Open Access•Yu Zhang•ARTICLE•Perspectives•2026

Following the First Sino–Japanese War, Japanese–Chinese translation flourished under reform-minded intellectuals and the Xinzheng Reform (institutional reforms introduced by the late Qing government). Among the translation agents, Yang Shu, Chinese minister to Japan from 1903 to 1907, emerged as an influential patron whose role has received little scholarly attention. Drawing on Lefevere’s theory of patronage, this case study examines Yang’s patr…

  • Trends in height and weight among children between 2003–04 and 2023–24 in Hong Kong Special Administrative Region, China

Yuting Zheng, Chengyue Li et al.•ARTICLE•Anthropologischer Anzeiger•2026

Among Hong Kong children aged 612 years, secular gains in height were evident over the full period from 2003-04 to 2023-24, but these gains occurred mainly before 2015-16. Body weight increased in earlier survey waves but declined in the most recent period, resulting in no significant net change across the full study period. More policies and interventions are needed to promote childrens growth and development.

  • Stress-resistant response of forest and grassland vegetation to karst desertification in North China Karst based on plant functional trait networks

    Open Access•Zhaohui Zhang, Z J Zhang et al.•ARTICLE•Trees Forests and People•2026

Forest and grassland vegetation (FGV) established for windbreak and sand fixation are under severe threat from the karst desertification (KD) in North China Karst. However, the unique ecological strategies of plant functional traits (PFTs) in FGV under the harsh KD environment remain poorly understood. Therefore, this study focused on dominant FGV species in a typical KD area of North China, identified trait spectra, examined shifts in ecological…

  • Psychological heterogeneity and residential demands in early-stage aging

Open Access•Lin Yuan, Yuan Lin et al.•ARTICLE•Frontiers in Public Health•2026

Background Research on home-based eldercare has increasingly moved beyond physical safety and accessibility to consider psychological wellbeing and everyday activity. However, older adults are still often treated as a homogeneous group. Less is known about how different psychological profiles are associated with residential preferences, activity patterns, and perceived environmental support among early-stage aging adults. Methods This study focus…

Xi Cai, Yu Zhang et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Urban Planning and…•2026

Sustainable cities require an integrated development in economic growth, technological innovation, and public welfare. However, existing research tends to assess these aspects in isolation, lacking a unifying framework to capture the interconnectedness of urban sustainability systems. To fill this gap, this study constructs an integrated assessment system that conceptualizes the city as a coupled economic, innovation, and welfare system. To measu…

  • Regression Discontinuity Analysis of Post-Covid-19 Reopening Effects on Urban Green Space Visitation

Longfeng Wu, Haowen Geng et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Urban Planning and…•2026

During the COVID-19 pandemic, sufficient access to urban green spaces enhanced residents’ health, particularly in densely populated areas subjected to lockdown and stay-at-home mandates. However, limited research has examined the effects of transitioning from strict containment measures to “reopening.” In this study, we used a unique dataset from two major Chinese cities, Beijing and Shanghai, to identify how changes in COVID-19 lockdown policy a…

Open Access•Xiaoyu Li, Yujie You et al.•ARTICLE•Educational Psychology•2026

Although interparental conflict is known to harm adolescent development, the cross-domain mechanisms influencing academic engagement and the role of individual vulnerability remain underexplored. A total of 1,626 Chinese adolescents (44.9% male; Mage = 16.19, SD = 1.00) participated in a three-wave longitudinal study with 3-month intervals. Results indicated that interparental conflict negatively predicted academic engagement six months later. Th…

Guan Yu worship has been a significant cultural force in China for centuries, shaping norms that foster generalized trust and acting as an informal institution in economic activities. Our findings reveal that regions with a higher historical density of Guan temples tend to have deeper financial development. To address potential endogeneity, we use the distance of each prefecture from Guan Yu’s hometown as an instrumental variable. The instrumente…

  • Animated discourse as a multimodal semiotic space

Open Access•Yu Zhang, Zhang Yu et al.•ARTICLE•Critique and Semiotics•2026

The article examines key semiotic and linguocultural approaches to analyzing animated discourse as a multimodal space characterized by bicameralism, polycodality, and complex semiotic architecture. An original three-stage model of semiotically oriented analysis is proposed, integrating interpretive, componential, and descriptive methods. Using the Chinese animated series “Agents of Time” / 时光代理人 as material, it is demonstrated how this semiotical…

Open Access•Xuehai Tang, Cheng Xu et al.•ARTICLE•Trees Forests and People•2026

Optimizing sample plot design and integrating UAV LiDAR data provide a promising approach for improving the estimation of forest above‐ground carbon stock. In this study, we surveyed typical northern subtropical coniferous and broad‐leaved forests using both ground measurements and UAV LiDAR. By comparing two plot shapes (circular vs. square) and three plot sizes, and applying Random Forest (RF) and XGBoost models, it was found that circular plot…
