Why Working from Home Will Stick
COVID-19 drove a mass social experiment in working from home (WFH). We survey more than 30,000 Americans over multiple waves to investigate whether WFH will stick, and why. Our data say that 20 percent of full workdays will be supplied from home after the pandemic ends, compared with just 5 percent before. We develop evidence on five reasons for this large shift: better-than-expected WFH experiences, new investments in physical and human capital …
Covid-Induced Economic Uncertainty
Assessing the economic impact of the COVID-19 pandemic is essential for policymakers, but challenging because the crisis has unfolded with extreme speed. We identify three indicators -stock market volatility, newspaper-based economic uncertainty, and subjective uncertainty in business expectation surveys -that provide real-time forward-looking uncertainty measures. We use these indicators to document and quantify the enormous increase in economic…

Semantics
Contains a broad selection of classic articles on semantics and the semantics/pragmatics interface. Comprehensive in the variety and breadth of theoretical frameworks and topics that it covers, it includes articles representative of the major theoretical frameworks within semantics, including: discourse representation theory, dynamic predicate logic, truth theoretic semantics, event semantics, situation semantics, and cognitive semantics. All the…

The role of communication and symbolism in interest group competition
Traditionally, interest group competition has been analyzed in terms of the quantifiable resources opposing groups can muster in a given policy struggle. Others have argued that less quantifiable, less easily measured communicative variables are just as important, if not more so. This study proposes that communication and the effective use of symbols are indeed crucial and often overlooked aspects of the political competition between interest gro…

Principles of Linguistic Philosophy
The view of linguistic philosophy presented in Waismann's book is one which has become stock in trade of some analytic philosophers. Philosophical problems are engendered by a superficial view of language. We are misled by linguistic analogies. Because a word is used in one context with one meaning, we think that it can be used in all contexts in this way (pp. 11, 60, 78, 179). Consequently, Waismann conceives philosophical activity as not answer…
