Evaluation of Peer Comforting Strategies by Children and Adolescents
Despite the importance of social support across the lifespan and extensive research on supportive communication between adults, little is known about how children or adolescents respond to the comforting efforts of their peers. The current study was designed to examine how 5th, 7th, and 9th graders evaluate six peer comforting strategies (sympathy, account giving, companionship, advice, optimism, and minimization) and to assess moderating effects…
Initial Encounters of Young Men and Women
Children's and Adolescents' Gender Preferences for Conversational Partners for Specific Communicative Objectives
For eight hypothetical situations involving different communicative objectives, fourth, sixth, eighth and tenth graders indicated whether the person they most wanted to talk with was male or female. As expected, younger children preferred a same-sex partner, but by eighth grade more cross-sex preferences emerged, particularly when wanting to pass time or feel included. Boys were generally preferred for telling jokes and stories. By eighth grade, …
Men's and women's self-confidence in persuasive, comforting, and justificatory communicative tasks
The impact of self interest and desire for liking on the selection of communicative strategies
Effects on selection of message strategies of variables relevant to two communicative objectives, task and interpersonal, were studied. Subjects composed a message in response to one of four situations: high or low self interest in compliance, or high or low desire for liking by the message recipient. Self interest influenced the degree of pressure exerted on the message recipient. Desire for liking altered usage of strategies which conveyed atti…
The content of informal conversations as a function of interactants' interpersonal cognitive complexity
Subjects varying in level of interpersonal cognitive complexity engaged in ten minutes of unstructured informal conversation. These conversations were analyzed for the extent to which the talk concerned the participants themselves, the immediate context of interaction, or topics external to the immediate setting. Presumably because of their spontaneous cognitive organization of the encounter more in terms of person‐relevant dimensions, a higher p…
Topoiand rhetorical competence
This essay argues that the speech communication scholar can make genuinely original contributions to the general study of communicative development, particularly to the investigation of strategic communication. The thesis advanced is that speech communication scholars need to return their attention to message strategies, but within the framework of the underlying cognitive and cultural structures through which they are created
Cognitive complexity, social perception, and the development of listener‐adapted communication in six‐, eight‐, ten‐, and twelve‐year‐old boys
The development of listener‐adapted communication is shown to involve a hierarchy in which the perception of communication‐relevant characteristics in listeners is a necessary but insufficient basis for the formulation of listener‐adapted messages
Cognitive Complexity, Social Perspective-Taking, and Functional Persuasive Skills in Second- To Ninth-Grade Children
The assumption underlying this research is that effectiveness in communication involves social perception processes. Specifically, it was predicted that effectiveness in adapting persuasive messages to recipients would be related to the complexity of the interpersonal construct system (cognitive complexity) and to the ability to represent the perspectives of others (social perspective-taking). Fifty-eight children ranging from second through nint…
The Development of Functional Persuasive Skills in Childhood and Early Adolescence
Effects of Grammatical Information on Word Predictability
The purpose of this investigation was to determine whether providing a respondent with the designation of the grammatical form class of words deleted from prose contexts would affect his performance in a word prediction task. Word replacements were obtained under conditions where such designations were or were not provided. The results were analyzed in terms of whether response words corresponded in grammatical form class with deleted items (FC-s…
Effects of Shared Referential Experience Upon Encoder-Decoder Agreement
The effects of referential experience upon encoder-decoder agreement were studied by presenting decoders with stimuli (abstract paintings) originally used to elicit the messages. Agreement was assessed in terms of two measures of word predictability—verbatim replacement and replacement of words of the same grammatical form classes as the deleted items. Results indicated that referential experience enhanced verbatim replacement and more for lexica…
