  • Mid- to late Holocene centennial-scale shifts of the Southern Hemisphere Westerly winds

    Open Access•Jérôme Kaiser, James A Collins et al.•ARTICLE•The Holocene•2026•References: 98

Centennial-timescale variability of the Southern Hemisphere Westerly wind belt (SHW) is poorly documented, mainly due to a paucity of long, high-resolution climate records from the Southern Hemisphere. Moreover, the role played by the Southern Annular Mode (SAM), El Niño Southern Oscillation (ENSO) and solar variability in controlling the SHW is not well understood. We present a 7000-year record of grain size end-member modelling and C/N from Lak…

  • Chronology and environmental changes from a sediment core spanning the last 485 ka from Lake Acıgöl (SW Anatolia)

    Open Access•Hüseyin Çaldırak, Z Bora Ön et al.•ARTICLE•Quaternary International•2025•References: 1

  • Synchronizing the Western Gotland Basin (Baltic Sea) and Lake Kälksjön (central Sweden) sediment records using common cosmogenic radionuclide production variations

    Open Access•Markus Czymzik, Marcus Christl et al.•ARTICLE•The Holocene•2024•References: 12

Multi-archive studies of climate events and archive-specific response times require synchronous time scales. Aligning common variations in the cosmogenic radionuclide production rate via curve fitting methods provides a tool for the continuous synchronization of natural environmental archives down to decadal precision. Based on this approach, we synchronize 10 Be records from Western Gotland Basin (WGB, Baltic Sea) and Lake Kälksjön (KKJ, central…

  • Mediterranean-like “fall dump” events in the Baltic Sea

    Open Access•Jérôme Kaiser, Michał Tomczak et al.•ARTICLE•The Holocene•2023•References: 4

In the Mediterranean Sea, organic carbon-rich sapropels have been deposited periodically over the last fifteen million years. Some sapropels are characterized by high contents of the mat-forming, planktonic diatom Pseudosolenia calcar-avis and the planktonic diatom Thalassionema nitzschioides as a result of their mass sinking in autumn (the so-called “fall dump”). The present study shows that fall dump events also occurred in the brackish Baltic …

  • The East Gotland Basin (Baltic Sea) as a candidate Global boundary Stratotype Section and Point for the Anthropocene series

    Open Access•Jérôme Kaiser, Serena Abel et al.•ARTICLE•The Anthropocene Review•2023•Cited by: 2•References: 93

The short sediment core EMB201/7-4 retrieved from the East Gotland Basin, central Baltic Sea, is explored here as a candidate to host the stratigraphical basis for the Anthropocene series and its equivalent Anthropocene epoch, still to be formalized in the Geological Time Scale. The core has been accurately dated back to 1840 CE using a well-established event stratigraphy approach. A pronounced and significant change occurs at 26.5 cm (dated 1956…

  • Holocene sea-surface temperature variability in the Chilean fjord region

Open Access•Magaly Caniupán, Frank Lamy et al.•ARTICLE•Quaternary Research•2014

Here we provide three new Holocene (11–0 cal ka BP) alkenone-derived sea surface temperature (SST) records from the southernmost Chilean fjord region (50–53°S). SST estimates may be biased towards summer temperature in this region, as revealed by a large set of surface sediments. The Holocene records show consistently warmer than present-day SSTs except for the past ~ 0.6 cal ka BP. However, they do not exhibit an early Holocene temperature optim…

  • The late quaternary paleoenvironment of Chile as seen from marine archives

    Open Access•Jan-Berend W Stuut, Margarita Marchant et al.•ARTICLE•Geographica Helvetica•2006

Many variables have been used to reconstruct Chilean paleoenvironmental changes during the late Quaternary. In this paper we present an overview of a number of these variables, so-called proxies, that have been inferred from marine sediments from the Chilean continental margin and summarise the results. In general, a glacial-interglacial pattern of climate changes can be recognised in the proxy records with high-frequency variabilities superposed…
