  • Scots pine ( Pinus sylvestris ) dynamics in the Welsh Marches during the mid to late-Holocene

    Open Access•Dael Sassoon, William J Fletcher et al.•ARTICLE•The Holocene•2021•Cited by: 1•References: 12

Around 4000 cal yr BP, Scots pine ( Pinus sylvestris) suffered a widespread demise across the British Isles. This paper presents new information about P. sylvestris populations found in the Welsh Marches (western central Britain), for which the long-term history and origins are poorly known. Two new pollen records were produced from the Lin Can Moss ombrotrophic bog (LM18) and the Breidden Hill pond (BH18). The LM18 peat core is supported by loss…

  • Palynological evidence from a sub-alpine marsh of enhanced Little Ice Age snowpack in the Marrakech High Atlas, North Africa

    Open Access•Benjamin A Bell, William J Fletcher et al.•ARTICLE•Vegetation History and…•2021•References: 8

The grazing lands of the High Atlas are vulnerable to climate change and the decline of traditional management practices. However, prior to the mid-20th century, there is little information to examine historical environmental change and resilience to past climate variability. Here, we present a new pollen, non-pollen palynomorph (NPP) and microcharcoal record from a sub-alpine marsh (pozzine) at Oukaïmeden, located in the Marrakech High Atlas, Mo…

  • Human demography changes in Morocco and environmental imprint during the Holocene

    Open Access•Rachid Cheddadi, Alessio Palmisano et al.•ARTICLE•The Holocene•2019•Cited by: 5•References: 23

The aim of this work is to reconstruct the periods of growth and decline of human populations in Morocco and their potential impacts on the landscape over the past 10,000 years. In order to estimate the trends in the human population size between 10,000 and 3000 years ago, we used a summed probability distribution (SPD) of radiocarbon dates from a wide range of archaeological sites throughout Morocco. Landscape changes were identified and quantif…

  • UV-B-absorbing compounds in modern Cedrus atlantica pollen

    Open Access•Benjamin A Bell, William J Fletcher et al.•ARTICLE•The Holocene•2018•References: 1

Sporopollenin is a complex biopolymer which is the main component of the pollen grain exine and is partly composed of the aromatic compounds para-coumaric acid ( pCA) and ferulic acid (FA). These compounds absorb ultraviolet-B radiation (UV-B, 280–315 nm), and their abundance in pollen and spores has been shown to increase in response to increased UV-B flux. Here, we show that the relative abundance of UV-B-absorbing compounds (UACs) measured usi…

  • Mid-Holocene emergence of a low-frequency millennial oscillation in western Mediterranean climate

    Open Access•William J Fletcher, Maxime Debret et al.•ARTICLE•The Holocene•2012•Cited by: 16•References: 30

The nature and tempo of Holocene climate variability is examined in the record of forest vegetation from western Mediterranean marine core MD95-2043. Episodes of forest decline occurred at 10.1, 9.2, 8.3, 7.4, 5.4–4.5 and 3.7–2.9 cal. ka BP, and between 1.9 cal. ka BP and the top of the record (1.3 cal. ka BP). Wavelet analysis confirms a ~900 yr periodicity prior to and during the early Holocene and the dominance of a ~1750 yr periodicity after …

  • Millennial-scale variability during the last glacial in vegetation records from Europe

    Open Access•William J Fletcher, Marı́a Fernanda Sánchez Goñi et al.•ARTICLE•Quaternary Science Reviews•2010

  • Orbital- and sub-orbital-scale climate impacts on vegetation of the western Mediterranean basin over the last 48,000 yr

    Open Access•William J Fletcher, Marı́a Fernanda Sánchez Goñi et al.•ARTICLE•Quaternary Research•2008

High-resolution pollen analysis of Alborán Sea core MD95-2043 provides a 48-ka continuous vegetation record that can be directly correlated with sea surface and deep-water changes. The reliability of this record is supported by comparison with that of Padul (Sierra Nevada, Spain). Marine Isotope Stage (MIS) 3 was characterised by fluctuations in Quercus forest cover in response to Dansgaard-Oeschger climate variability. MIS 2 was characterised by…

  • Contrasting impacts of Dansgaard–Oeschger events over a western European latitudinal transect modulated by orbital parameters

Open Access•Marı́a Fernanda Sánchez Goñi, María Fernanda Sánchez Goñi et al.•ARTICLE•Quaternary Science Reviews•2008

  • Palynological evidence for environmental and climatic change in the lower Guadiana valley, Portugal, during the last 13 000 years

    Open Access•William J Fletcher, Tomasz Boski et al.•ARTICLE•The Holocene•2007•Cited by: 12•References: 13

Pollen analysis of a 48 m AMS radiocarbon-dated sediment sequence from the Guadiana estuary provides the first record of Lateglacial and Holocene vegetation history in the Algarve province of Portugal. This paper focuses on the record of terrestrial pollen taxa, which document a series of forest expansions and declines during the period 13 000 cal. BP to 1600 cal. BP and provide insights into climate evolution in southwestern Iberia. The main veg…
