  • Dumping on the Poor

Open Access•Anthony Baabereyir, Sarah Jewitt et al.•ARTICLE•Environment and Planning A…•2012•Cited by: 9•References: 38

This paper investigates the 'ecological distribution' and associated environmental injustices of Accra's growing domestic-waste burden and examines how inequalities in the spatial distribution of waste-collection services and waste-disposal sites reflect the uneven distribution of power and wealth within Ghanaian society. Particular emphasis is placed on inequalities in municipal service provision associated with Accra's integration within the gl…

  • From Geo-Strategy to Geo-Economics

    Sarah O''Hara, Sarah L O’hara et al.•ARTICLE•Geopolitics•2006•Cited by: 2

In this paper we examine the changing perception of Central Asia and the Caucasus to Imperial Britain from the mid nineteenth to the mid twentieth centuries and consider the importance of Mackinder's 1904 paper ‘The Geographical Pivot of History’ to this process. In it we argue that Central Asia and the Caucasus are seen first as an important buffer zone essential to keeping the Russia aggressors at bay and ensuring Britain's continued dominance …

  • Corona Remotely-Sensed Imagery in Dryland Archaeology

Open Access•Keith Challis, Gary Priestnall et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Field Archaeology•2004•Cited by: 6•References: 10

Satellite remote sensing has seen some use in archaeological research, although its effectiveness has been restricted by the low spatial resolution and the high cost of available imagery. In 1995 the United States declassified 860,000 high-resolution Corona satellite photographs, acquired for intelligence purposes between 1960 and 1972. Corona offers global coverage with an emphasis on areas of strategic significance to the United States. The ima…

  • Great game or Grubby game? the struggle for control of the Caspian

    Sarah O''Hara, Sarah L O’hara et al.•ARTICLE•Geopolitics•2004

In this article I examine the way in which resource conflict in the Caspian Sea Basin has become entwined in the development of geopolitical thought and ideas since the late nineteenth century. I argue that Mackinder's inclusion of the Caspian in his original pivot was significant and that because of its considerable strategic importance control of the region was seen as crucial to all sides in both the First World War and the Second World War. T…

  • Wet Conditions during the Last Glaciation in the Chihuahuan Desert, Alta Babicora Basin, Mexico

Open Access•E Metcalfe, Sarah Metcalfe et al.•ARTICLE•Quaternary Research•2002

A 467-cm core (B94/3) from the Alta Babicora basin in the Chihuahuan Desert, northern Mexico (29°N, 108°W), documents lake-level and climate changes over the past ca. 65,000 yr. Chronological control is provided by four accelerator mass spectrometry 14 C dates and five U-series dates on diatom silica. The core has been analyzed for magnetic susceptibility, loss-on-ignition, carbonate content, sediment chemistry and mineralogy, and pollen and diat…
