  • Exchange Rate Reconnect

Andrew Lilley, Matteo Maggiori et al.•ARTICLE•The Review of Economics and…•2022

It is surprisingly difficult to find economic variables that strongly comove with exchange rates, a phenomenon codified in a large literature as “exchange rate disconnect.” We demonstrate that a variety of common proxies for global risk appetite, which did not comove with exchange rates prior to 2007, have provided significant in-sample explanatory power for currencies since then. Furthermore, during the 2007–2012 period, U.S. purchases of foreig…

  • How Many Jobs Can be Done at Home?

Jonathan I Dingel, Jonathan Dingel et al.•REPORT•National Bureau of Economic…•2020

Evaluating the economic impact of "social distancing" measures taken to arrest the spread of COVID-19 raises a fundamental question about the modern economy: how many jobs can be performed at home?We classify the feasibility of working at home for all occupations and merge this classification with occupational employment counts. We find that 37 percent of jobs in the United States can be performed entirely at home, with significant variation acro…

  • International Currencies and Capital Allocation

Matteo Maggiori, Brent Neiman et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Political Economy•2019•Cited by: 2•References: 10

We establish currency as an important factor shaping global portfolios. Using a new security-level data set, we demonstrate that investor holdings are biased toward their own currencies to such an extent that countries typically hold most of the foreign-debt securities denominated in their currency. While large firms issue in foreign currency and borrow from foreigners, most firms issue only in local currency and do not directly access foreign ca…

  • The Global Decline of the Labor Share

Loukas Karabarbounis, Brent Neiman•ARTICLE•The Quarterly Journal of Economics•2014

The stability of the labor share of income is a key foundation in macroeconomic models. We document, however, that the global labor share has significantly declined since the early 1980s, with the decline occurring within the large majority of countries and industries. We show that the decrease in the relative price of investment goods, often attributed to advances in information technology and the computer age, induced firms to shift away from l…

  • On Deficits and Unemployment

Notre anal…
