Community experiences of the impacts of climate-induced extreme weather events in Uganda
Climate change is impacting health, social systems and livelihoods of populations across the world with sub-Saharan Africa being particularly hard-hit. Lived experiences of the impacts of climate change are paramount to understanding how at-risk communities are uniquely impacted and collectively devise response mechanisms. However, there is limited evidence of the community’s lived experiences of these impacts. This study explored the community e…
Maternal anaemia and risk of neonatal and infant mortality in low- and middle-income countries
BACKGROUND: Anaemia in pregnancy has been recognised worldwide as a growing public health concern and an important cause of adverse neonatal outcomes. However, only a limited number of studies have been done in low-income settings, which have the highest prevalence of anaemia. We aimed to investigate the association between maternal anaemia and neonatal and infant mortality in low- and middle-income countries. METHODS: Secondary analysis of poole…
Accelerating progress towards better public health and sustainable development in fragile settings
box Despite notable progress in some health-related targets, the majority of health-related Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) targets are off track in fragile and conflict-affected countries, which are simultaneously facing geopolitical insecurity and declining funding sources
Maintenance of service delivery during medical countermeasures deployment
COVID-19 vaccines significantly reduced COVID-19 related morbidity and mortality. Although purposeful response measures like movement restrictions affected delivery of other health services, few studies have investigated the association between COVID-19 vaccination as a response strategy and continuity of other immunization services. We aimed to assess the association between the COVID-19 vaccine rollout and continuity of routine immunization ser…
Navigating global health diplomacy
Addressing global health challenges requires complex coordination and collaboration between actors, often through the process of Global Health Diplomacy (GHD). Although considerable scholarship argues the importance of improving this process to build better health policies and systems, few studies have investigated the ‘health diplomats’ directly leading this work. In this study, we seek to better understand GHD from a practitioners’ view by expl…
Exploring different health care providers ́ perceptions on the management of diarrhoea in cholera hotspots in the Democratic Republic of Congo
Global cholera guidelines support wider healthcare system strengthening interventions, alongside vertical outbreak responses, to end cholera. Well-trained healthcare providers are essential for a resilient health system and can create synergies with childhood diarrhoea, which has higher mortality. We explored how the main provider groups for diarrhoea in cholera hotspots interact, decide on treatment, and reflect on possible limiting factors and …
Schools of public health as a cornerstone for pandemic preparedness and response
How interventions to maintain services during the Covid-19 pandemic strengthened systems for delivery of maternal and child health services
BACKGROUND: Health systems are resilient if they absorb, adapt, and transform in response to shocks. Although absorptive and adaptive capacities have been demonstrated during the COVID-19 response, little has been documented about their transformability and strengthened service delivery systems. We aimed to describe improvements in maternal and child health service delivery as a result of investments during the COVID-19 response. METHODS: This wa…
Facility capacity and provider knowledge for cholera surveillance and diarrhoea case management in cholera hotspots in the Democratic Republic of Congo – a mixed-methods study
BACKGROUND: Wider healthcare-strengthening interventions are recommended in cholera hotspots and could benefit other types of diarrhoeal diseases which contribute to greater mortality than cholera. OBJECTIVE: Describe facility capacity and provider knowledge for case management of diarrhoea and cholera surveillance in cholera hotspots in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) among health facilities, drug shops, and traditional health practitione…

Linkages between the Sustainable Development Goals and health in Somalia
The findings revealed that in Somalia, the interactions between the SDGs are mostly synergistic and that SDG 16 (peace, justice, and strong institutions) has a strong influence on progress on other SDGs as well as progress on SDG 3 (good health and well-being). This study highlights the need for a multisectoral strategy to accelerate progress on the SDGs in Somalia in general, and particularly SDG 3 (good health and well-being)
Enablers and barriers to implementing cholera interventions in Nigeria
Nigeria accounts for a substantial cholera burden globally, particularly in its northeast region, where insurgency is persistent and widespread. We used participatory group model building workshops to explore enablers and barriers to implementing known cholera interventions, including water, sanitation and hygiene, surveillance and laboratory, case management, community engagement, oral cholera vaccine, and leadership and coordination, as well as…
Influences of community engagement and health system strengthening for cholera control in cholera reporting countries
The 2030 Global Task Force on Cholera Control Roadmap hinges on strengthening the implementation of multistranded cholera interventions, including community engagement and health system strengthening. However, a composite picture of specific facilitators and barriers for these interventions and any overlapping factors existing between the two, is lacking. Therefore, this study aims to address this shortcoming, focusing on cholera-reporting countr…
Usability of pulse oximeters used by community health and primary care workers as screening tools for severe illness in children under five in low resource settings
Timely recognition and referral of severely ill children is especially critical in low-resource health systems. Pulse-oximeters can improve health outcomes of children by detecting hypoxaemia, a severity indicator of the most common causes of death in children. Cost-effectiveness of pulse-oximeters has been proven in low-income settings. However, evidence on their usability in community health settings is scarce. This study explores the usability …
Integrating the United Nations sustainable development goals into higher education globally
BACKGROUND: In 2015, the United Nations adopted the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, including the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Higher education institutions have a role in raising awareness and building skills among future professionals for implementing the SDGs. This review describes how the SDGs have been integrated into higher education globally. OBJECTIVES: Determine how have the SDGs been integrated into higher education…
The missing middle of childhood
Middle childhood, between six and twelve years, is a critical bridge between earlier childhood and adolescence with rapid physical and psychological transitions. Most of the world's 2.6 billion young people, of which the middle childhood age group is a significant portion, live in low- and middle-income countries. Many live in environments that place them at high and growing risk for mental ill-health, injuries, and adoption of risky behaviours t…
Sustainable preventive integrated child health care
Worldwide, 85% of all children who die are under the age of five. A recent scoping review examining the literature from 2000 to 2021 shows the importance of sustainable integrated preventive child health care for improving child health, enhancing the uptake of preventive child health services, and decreasing health-care costs. In 2022, we organised a stakeholder workshop in Uganda to discuss and contextualise the findings of the scoping review. T…
