Death by Combat at the Dawn of the Bronze Age? Profiling the Dagger-Accompanied Burial From Racton, West Sussex
A previously unresearched Early Bronze Age dagger-grave found in 1989 at Racton, West Sussex, is profiled here through a range of studies. The dagger, the only grave accompaniment, is of the ‘transitional’ Ferry Fryston type, this example being of bronze rather than copper. Excavations at Trecastell, Powys, south Wales, in 2007 yielded a copper halberd complete with its haft-grip. This has major implications for the mode of hafting halberds, but the discovery has also prompted a reconsideration of insular halberds in their north-west European context. I used county-level employment statistics in California (1980–2000), along with major regulatory periods and other controlling factors, to estimate local concentrations of the coefficient of haze, carbon monoxide, and nitrogen dioxide using a mixed regression model approach. Six ice cores from Kilimanjaro provide an ∼11.7-thousand-year record of Holocene climate and environmental variability for eastern equatorial Africa, including three periods of abrupt climate change: ∼8.3, ∼5.2, and ∼4 thousand years ago (ka). Three cists and a possible Roman road at Barbush Quarry, Dunblane, Perthshire
A concentration of archaeological features identified and excavated at the quarry included three short cists, one containing a cannel coal and jet disc-bead necklace and another a poorly-preserved skeleton and a Food Vessel. Finds appeared to be from the Early Bronze Age but a radiocarbon date from the skeletal material gave a later date of c. 2845 BP. Other finds included two parallel ditches associated with an area of packed gravel and cobbles …

An Early Bronze Age flat cist cemetery was excavated after it was exposed by reservoir erosion. Nine surviving cists were found, containing a mixture of inhumations and cremations. Grave goods included food vessels and a unique cannel coal and lead necklace. Where skeletal remains survived, most of the deceased were sub-adult or young adults.
