После распада СССР регионы России и бывшие союзные республики интенсивно встраивались в новые глобальные процессы мобильности населения. На примере Южного Урала авторы статьи показывают, как российский регион становился частью масштабных миграционных обменов в постсоветский период. В статье охарактеризованы основные этнические группы, принимавшие участие в миграционных процессах, показаны причины и факторы движения населения, выявлена степень их влияния на социально-экономическую ситуацию в Челябинской области, определены причины ксенофобских настроений принимающей стороны. Источниковую базу составили архивные документы, результаты полевых исследований авторов, а также материалы социологических опросов, прошедших в последние годы. Исследование показало, что основу среднеазиатской миграции в Челябинскую область составляли русскоязычные жители Казахстана, а на более поздних этапах — таджики. Особенности освоения ими городского пространства, трудности инкорпорации иноэтничных мигрантов в принимающее сообщество порождают сегодня все более явную социальную напряженность. Южный Урал встраивался в процессы масштабных трансграничных перемещений главным образом из Средней Азии, которые на продолжительный период определили траектории движения иноэтничных мигрантов
