This article discusses the themes of the coloniality of knowledge and the production of truths in the context on the modern environmental issue.The work starts from the analysis of these themes to discuss them in empirical contexts of socio-environmental conflicts.To do so, it uses results of studies on the modalities of participative water management in Brazil, taking as reference the complex case of São Paulo.In identifying the disciplinary knowledges used in the thematization of the environmental issue in the context of the São Paulo water management, it is sought to reconstitute the social construction of sustainability discourses in public debate on the governance of the resource, emphasizing the modalities of discursive authorities in construction and or consolidated.The hypothesis raised is that politics in these arenas of governance privileges the technical debate, hindering the participation of agents who do not dominate knowledge and specific grammar.In addition, by naturalizing the liberal notion of organized civil society, this management system greatly hinders the incorporation of difference in water governance.The analysis developed is based on a theoretical dialogue between the postcolonial perspective and the formulations about symbolic domination and its effects of truth in the work of Pierre Bourdieu
