Experiments with the square array
Electrical resistance data were collected in an electrolytic tank, using the main configurations of the square array, in order to assess the behaviour of the system over an insulating sphere and prism. Experiments carried out were: (i) mapping of area responses for targets at a fixed depth and the effect of strike direction and electrode separation on anomaly form; (ii) production of pseudosections; (iii) investigation of the depth response of th…
The Schlumberger array—potential and pitfalls in archaeological prospection
The orientation‐sensitive performance of the Schlumberger array, when used to survey narrow, linear features, has long been recognized in geophysical prospecting for geology. However, in spite of frequent use of the array for archaeological survey, particularly in eastern Europe and the Far East, this directional effect is not apparent in the survey of walls and ditches. In order to examine the array's performance some experiments were carried ou…

The electrical pseudo‐section
With the aid of a simple theoretical model, of an insulating sphere in a homogeneous conducting medium, this note discusses the relative merits of ‘longitudinal’ and ‘transverse’ passages of earth resistivity arrays over buried features. It is shown that pseudo-sections developed from the transverse passage of Wenner and twin-probe arrays are significantly less ambiguous than for longitudinal traverses. The practical significance of this differen…

Geophysical prospection in garden archaeology
A reappraisal of data from geophysical surveys carried out, over a period from 1983 to 1993 in five historic gardens in England and Scotland, is reported. Current data processing procedures and, where available, site documentation have been utilised. Garden features, unobserved in earlier interpretations, have become apparent and are in accord with the available archaeological and historic records. Guidelines for effective routines in the approac…

Stages of ‘Neolithisation’ in Southern France
‘Neolithisation’ as defined in this paper is the process whereby populations of Southern France modified their patterns of settlement and economic behaviour from the sixth to the third millennia bc. In moving from dependence mainly on varied seasonal resources to dependence on mainly humanly manipulated and stored resources, they created the possibility of surpluses for exchange. The main emphasis of this paper is on raw materials and changes in …
Neutron Activation Analysis of Faience Beads
S A selection of faience beads has been examined using neutron activation analysis, with a view to distinguishing the provenance of individual specimens. Evidence is presented that the tin content in beads from British sites is significantly higher than in those from other areas. Characteristic features of beads from other sources are also discussed
Neutron Activation Analysis of Prehistoric Flint Mine Products
S Specimens of flint from English and Continentai prehistoric factory/mine sites have been analysed using neutron activation and element compositions compared. The possible use of element concentration patterns as a means of characterising such sites is discussed

The Canningite Party”
It is well known that between 1801 and 1809 the Tory Party broke up into several groups led by Addington, Grenville, Wellesley, Perceval, and Canning, which were divided partly by personal, partly by political differences; and that the two-party system was temporarily superseded by the group system. Much new information concerning the smallest but the most distinguished of these various connexions is to be found in the Huskisson, Liverpool, Granv…
