With the aid of a simple theoretical model, of an insulating sphere in a homogeneous conducting medium, this note discusses the relative merits of ‘longitudinal’ and ‘transverse’ passages of earth resistivity arrays over buried features. It is shown that pseudo-sections developed from the transverse passage of Wenner and twin-probe arrays are significantly less ambiguous than for longitudinal traverses. The practical significance of this difference in the realization of ‘true’ vertical sections is discussed briefly. © 1997 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd
