Keynes, Ramsey, and Pragmatism
In his recent paper in this journal, Bradley Bateman (2021) breaks with the “standard view” of Frank Ramsey’s influence on Jahn Maynard Keynes and argues that Ramsey’s pragmatist philosophical thought underpinned both Keynes’s acceptance of Ramsey’s subjective theory of probability and Keynes’s adoption of a narrative theory of the role of confidence in economic fluctuations in the General Theory . In this paper it is argued that Bateman is right…
The Road Less Travelled
Knight’s risk/uncertainty distinction is reviewed in its original context as a contribution to the theory of profit. Knight’s approach to probability is paralleled by Ludwig von Mises, as emphasised by recent developments in strategic entrepreneurship theory. Von Mises distinguishes between class probability (i.e., risk) and case probability (i.e., uncertainty) in contrast to the frequentist approach of his brother, Richard von Mises. Keynes’s co…
A Post Keynesian theory of decision making under uncertainty
The Significance of the Monetary Context of Economic Behavior
The dominant paradigm in economics views economic behavior as allocative activity in a neutral, C-M-C' economy. As a consequence, money is treated as a veil that is inessential to the real functioning of the economic system. This paper argues that one of Keynes's fundamental insights is the significance of the monetary context of economic behavior. This insight has been developed by the post-Keynesian theory of money as a "time-machine vehicle" t…
The Impact of Road Pricing and Workplace Parking Levies on the Urban Economy
This paper reports the results of a survey of business attitudes to current transport problems and their likely responses to the introduction of road user charging (RUC) and workplace parking levies (WPLs). A sample of 152 responses from private sector businesses in three UK historic cities is analysed. Businesses perceive traffic congestion and inadequate public transport provision as key problems. Businesses typically expect the introduction of…
Estimating Coaching Efficiency in Professional Team Sports
This study provides a review of the literature on sporting production functions with an emphasis on different input‐output specifications and alternative estimation procedures. Empirical evidence is reported for English association football on the robustness of estimates of coaching efficiency to changes in estimation methods and the definition of team performance and playing talent inputs. A measure of player quality based on predicted start‐of‐…

Beyond Rational Expectations
This paper suggests that behaviour under uncertainty depends not only on rational expectations but also the agent's evaluation of the adequacy of the available evidence on which the expectations are based. It is argued that behavioural functions need to be augmented by a credence variable. This proposition is derived from Keynes's argument in the General Theory that investment depends on both the most probable forecast and the state of confidence…

The Financial Performance of the Leeds Engineering Sector
Using ratio analysis the financial performance of a sample of independent single-plant engineering firms in Leeds is examined with regard to structural and locational differences in establishments. A number of determinants of performance are derived and tested against the constructed data base. Inner-city engineering firms perform relatively less well on all indicators of performance compared with outer-city firms. The study illustrates the impor…

Intraurban Location Effects on Firm Performance
In this paper the extent to which there are systematic intraurban location effects on firm performance is investigated. A very disaggregated approach is adopted, with a focus on firms in a single industry (engineering) in a single city (Leeds). With use of both ratio and regression analysis it is found that, on average, engineering firms located in the inner Leeds area have a lower level of profitability
