Experiencing Trauma During or Before Pregnancy
New Life Through Disaster
Background: On May 3, 2016, residents of Fort McMurray Wood Buffalo, Alberta were evacuated due to an uncontrolled wildfire. The short-notice evacuation had destabilizing consequences for residents, including changes in routines, loss of control, and increased uncertainty. These consequences were especially detrimental to women who were pregnant or pre-conception during the evacuation. Pregnant and pre-conception women are particularly susceptibl…
Do changes in maize prices and input prices affect smallholder farmers’ soil fertility management decisions? panel survey evidence from Kenya
Soil fertility management (SFM) practices such as maize-legume intercropping and organic fertiliser, particularly when used jointly with inorganic fertiliser, have the potential to increase yields and yield response to inorganic fertiliser, improve soil health, and contribute to sustainable intensification (SI). However, relatively little is known about the drivers of adoption of these practices, especially for joint use. Moreover, it has been su…
Enhancing Resilience in Canadian Military Families and Communities
Introduction: A new vision of resilience and well-being for Canadian military service members (SMs), Veterans and their families has been championed by the Canadian Armed Forces (CAF) and Veterans Affairs Canada (VAC). Operationalizing this vision, which aims to support those who serve/have served and their families as they navigate life during and post-service, requires the support of service providers (SPs). Training SPs to deliver complementar…
The Fort McMurray Mommy Baby Study
Introduction: Data show that maternal stress triggered by exposure to a natural disaster before, during or just after pregnancy is associated with adverse pregnancy and newborn outcomes. In this paper, the first aim is to describe our efforts to test a simple, low-cost intervention to large numbers of women following a major natural disaster. The second aim is to outline the challenges faced and lessons learned during the execution of this natura…

Understanding Local Ecological Knowledge, Ethnozoology, and Public Opinion to Improve Pangolin Conservation in the Center and East Regions of Cameroon
African pangolins are exceptionally difficult to monitor in the wild, which means that assessing threats and impacts to these species also remains a challenge. Local ecological knowledge (LEK) surveys have been recommended as an important tool to collect data for small elusive species. We carried out community-based interviews in 20 villages surrounding Mpem et Djim and Deng-Deng National Parks to gather information on local ecological and tradit…
A Global Deal For Nature
The Global Deal for Nature sets an ambitious agenda to protect our biosphere through ecosystem conservation and land restoration.
An Ecoregion-Based Approach to Protecting Half the Terrestrial Realm
We assess progress toward the protection of 50% of the terrestrial biosphere to address the species-extinction crisis and conserve a global ecological heritage for future generations. Using a map of Earth's 846 terrestrial ecoregions, we show that 98 ecoregions (12%) exceed Half Protected; 313 ecoregions (37%) fall short of Half Protected but have sufficient unaltered habitat remaining to reach the target; and 207 ecoregions (24%) are in peril, w…

Questions about Legislative Institutional Change and Transformation in Eastern and East Central Europe
In the second post-communist decade, post 2000, regional contrasts between Eastern Europe and East Central Europe have become more explicit in legislative developments as differences in communist parties' performance, leadership roles, and country stability and international focus. This broad inter-regional comparison beyond parliaments shows that both original institutional choices and past legacies equally determine the contrast in parliaments'…
Two Decades of Divergent Post-Communist Parliamentary Development

Post-Communist and Post-Soviet Parliaments
The initial decade experience of six post-authoritarian parliaments following the end of the Cold War suggests four types: the transitional presidential-conflict parliaments (Moldova, Poland, Russia), and at the end of the decade, the pluralist democratic parliaments (Czech Republic, Poland, Slovenia), the majoritarian democratic parliament (Hungary), and the presidentially dominated parliaments (Moldova, Russia). They experienced changes through…
Post-Communist and Post-Soviet Legislatures
Legislatures exist in most countries, but there has been relatively little examination of how they come into being and contribute to the development of a stable polity. The emergence of new democracies in Central and Eastern Europe creates an unrivalled opportunity to examine the transition of legislatures from non-democratic to democratic regimes. Taking political stability as our dependent variable, we advance hypotheses about legislative devel…
Conclusion
The two terms ‘cohesion’ and ‘discipline’ may be viewed as multi-faceted, intersecting continua of organisational behaviour of parliamentary party groups. This article examines the context of parliaments and parliamentary party groups, the contingent rules of the plenary vote occasion, and the varied ways of expressing and measuring party unity in the vote, as essential contexts within which to understand both cohesion and discipline in the plena…
The Global 200
A global strategy to conserve biodiversity must aim to protect representative examples of all of the world's ecosystems, as well as those areas that contain exceptional concentrations of species and endemics. Although lacking the richness of tropical forests, deserts, tropical lakes, and subpolar seas all contain distinct species, communities, and ecological phenomena. We analyzed global patterns of biodiversity to identify a set of the Earth's t…
Terrestrial Ecoregions of the World
The tapestry of life on Earth is unraveling as humans increasingly dominate and transform natural ecosystems. Scarce resources and dwindling time force conservationists to target their actions to stem the loss of biodiversity—a pragmatic approach, given the highly uneven distribution of species and threats (Soulé and Kohm 1989, Olson and Dinerstein 1998, Mace et al. 2000, Myers et al. 2000). Unfortunately, the ability to focus strategically is hi…

Party Formation and Party System Consolidation in the New Democracies of Central Europe
Political parties and the party systems of the new democracies of postcommunist Central Europe are in the process of formation through a sequence of elections and parliamentary terms. The sequence theory of electionparliament cycles suggests that in new democracies the formation of political parties and the de®nition of relationships among the parties proceed through a series of elections and the ensuing terms of parliament. During the current be…
Committees in the post‐communist polish sejm
The development of committees in the Polish Sejm illustrates the process of institutionalisation in newly democratised legislatures. The Polish committee system is reviewed through documentary sources and three sets of member interviews. While the formal attributes of the committee system closely resembles those of continental western Europe, we also find that the transitional difficulties of new democratic systems, especially member characterist…
The Consolidation of Democracy in East-Central Europe
Edited by two of the world's leading analysts of post-communist politics, this book brings together distinguished specialists on the Baltic states (Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania), Poland, the Czech Republic, Slovakia and Hungary. The authors analyse the patterns of post-communist democratization in these countries, paying particular attention to the process of party formation, electoral politics, the growth of civil society, and the impact of eco…
Paradoxes of Institutional Development
The parliaments of newly democratic Central Europe face six paradoxes of institutional development: new members in outmoded facilities; from monocentric party to multi-party systems; new conflicts and old rules; committees as structures of expertise and power; executive puzzle of “president, cabinet and parliament”; and active parliament and disbelieving public. These institutional paradoxes result from and are contained within, the grand paradox…
Parliaments in adolescence
Applying the research framework outlined in the introduction, this paper finds that in the new democracies of central and eastern Europe borrowing from the old regime rather than from Western expertise is predominant in constitution making and that the policy activity of the new parliaments is shaped predominantly by external influences. The fluid nature of political parties and limited pressure group activity facilitate policy activity at the ex…
Legislatures in democratic transition
Legislatures are ubiquitous and have consequences for political systems. The focus of analysis has typically been the role of the legislature in affecting policy outcomes in an established polity. Opportunities for analysing the role of legislatures in regime transitions have been limited. The transition from Communist regimes to new democracies in central and eastern Europe provides a rich field for analysis. This paper provides the framework fo…

Compartmentalized Competition
The compartmentalized election system, negotiated for the 1989 Polish parliamentary elections, was a transitional, rather than a founding election within an authoritarian system transformation. Seats were allocated to seven compartments open to different contestants and employing different rules. Both the ensuing campaign and the electorate's response overwhelmed the intended limited competition, with the result that the election was transformed …

Evolution of a Minimal Parliament
The Polish Sejm can be regarded as a minimal parliament. Here, through data that pertain to the Sejm's composition, committee structure and activities, and the actions taken by Poland's parliament on legislation, the potentials and limits for a minimal parliament are examined. While the Sejm's evolution to a more influential posture is not assured, evidence is found to suggest that the parliament's capacity to influence policy formation and admin…

Dissolution of the state
The breakup of Czechoslovakia on 31 December 1992 resulted in the emergence of a newly independent Slovakia and Czech Republic. The split is often interpreted as the result of ethnic nationalism. In contrast, this paper attempts to assess the influence of regional inequalities and uneven economic development on the split. Pre-World War Two Czechoslovakia was unable to address large regional differences between the Czech lands and Slovakia. The ec…

The study of comparative politics would be greatly aided if we had a book on each country of the world presenting a well-organized summary of election events and voting results over a substantial time period. The book under review presents such a survey for South Africa. Each general election in the period 1943-1970 is the subject of a chapter, organized in similar fashion: contestants (the parties, their election issues, and number of seats cont…
