Serving Latino Farmworker Students in Michigan Summer Migrant Programs
This survey and interview-based study examined the perspectives of 30 of the 38 migrant directors in Michigan, covering 26 summer migrant programs. Among the findings of this study were an unexpected inverse relationship between the size of programs and the frequency and number of external services and referrals they are able to provide for students; a widespread concern with interstate credit accrual and communication between state programs as w…
Gender Differences in Adolescents’ Wishful Identification With Scientist Characters on Television
Adolescents’ wishful identification with televised scientist characters was examined as related to interactions among the following variables: gender of participant, gender of scientist character, program genre, and selected character attributes. Findings indicated some gender differences in adolescents’ wishful identification with scientist characters they viewed on television. Boys showed more wishful identification with male scientist than wit…

Portrayals of Male and Female Scientists in Television Programs Popular Among Middle School-Age Children
This content analysis examined portrayals of scientist characters in 14 television programs popular among or likely to have been viewed by middle school—age children. While male scientists significantly outnumbered and appeared in significantly more scenes than did female scientists, males and females were depicted similarly in reference to professional position, marital status, and parental status. Gender-stereotyped behavior was largely absent …
Development of the Hassles of Environmental Poverty Instrument
Contemporary research has shown that chronic hassles can be as debilitating as acute stress and may be more of a determinant in the development of mental and physical disorders. In fact, frequency and intensity of hassles can be better predictors of stress responses than major life events. Although daily hassles have been shown to be population specific, existing measures of hassles do not distinguish between the hassles that impact men and those…

Creating Item Characteristic Curves from Logist and Bical Output
Several SAS Graph programs are presented for convenient graphical presentation of item and test characteristic curves and related functions from one, two, or three parameter IRT models. Inspection of these graphs can greatly facilitate understanding and use of tabular output of such commercial programs as LOGIST and BICAL
Serotonin, Septal Lesions, and Shock-Escape Learning in Rats
The involvement of reduced serotonin in deficient leverpress, shock-escape performance of rats with septal lesions was assessed in two studies. In Exp. 1, rats were treated with either para-chlorophenylalanine (PCPA) or saline and then tested in a leverpress, shock-escape task. In Exp. 2, rats with septal lesions and sham-operated control rats were treated daily with either 5-hydroxytryptophan (5HTP) or saline and tested on the same shock-escape …
