School leadership in a remote small cluster of schools
This study analyses the challenges and opportunities of school leadership in a Portuguese remote cluster of schools. Using a mixed-methods approach, the case study explores multiple stakeholders’ perceptions of the headteacher’s leadership practices. Findings point to the importance of leadership practices in providing strategic direction, seen as crucial in a resource-limited environment. Leading a small school size facilitated close relationshi…

Successful School Principalship
This meta-synthesis crosses international borders by analyzing successful principalship across nine countries. With careful, detailed, systematic, and analytic synthesis, it critically explores research-informed understandings of successful principal leadership over the last 20 years. The paper is an interim report of reviews of the 85 articles and 23 chapters produced by the International Successful School Principal Project (ISSPP), the largest,…
Lessons from Two Decades of Research about Successful School Leadership in England
This paper reviews the research on successful school principalship carried out in England over the last 20 years. Drawing on evidence synthesized from the International Successful School Principalship Project (ISSPP) and related English school leadership research conducted by ISSPP scholars, this review aims to answer a conceptual research question: How do the principalship’s moral purposes and contextual understanding shape the time-sensitive, i…

Research ethics and the study of armed actors
This Special Issue assesses the state of the field and advances corresponding debates by reflecting unflinchingly on the unanticipated costs and consequences that have resulted from our collective studies of armed actors, especially in unstable and insecure settings. We introduce the idea of research silences – the controversial topics, regions, populations and perspectives that tend to be neglected or avoided, representing an ethical blind spot …
Engagement Matters
Research Ethics, Fieldwork, and African Studies
In recent years, there has been a noticeable uptick in efforts to address the ethical, methodological, and security challenges of conducting field research. In fact, an entire scholarly community has emerged from different pockets of area and conflict studies to develop and share a body of literature and foster interactive forums to advance this important area of study.1 Much of this work builds on the influential accounts of individual researche…
Wildlife Management in South Sudan, 1901-2021
To date, there is no systematic research on the overlapping challenges of wildlife conservation and security in South Sudan, where the wildlife service (WLS) has institutionally survived for over a century while contending with poor state capacity and responsibility for protected areas (PAs) that cover vast territories characterized by chronic insecurity and food scarcity. Integrated into the country's "Organized Forces," South Sudan's park range…
Elsberg Syndrome with Mixed Presentation as Meningitis Retention Syndrome
Elsberg syndrome is a typically infectious syndrome that may cause acute or subacute bilateral lumbosacral radiculitis and sometimes lower spinal cord myelitis. Patients often present with various neurological symptoms involving the lower extremities, including numbness, weakness, and urinary disturbances such as retention. A 9-year-old girl with no significant past medical history presented with altered mental status, fever, urinary retention, a…
East Africa after Liberation
Only a small number of Africa’s many civil wars since independence have ended with rebel victory, and an even smaller number of those victories have seen rebels transition into successful rulers able to create durable political systems that persisted for decades following the ouster of the ancien regime. In East Africa after Liberation, Fisher considers several flagship cases from the 1980s and 1990s—Uganda’s National Resistance Army (nra), the R…
Roadblock Politics
The Fragile States Index shows that the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) and the Central African Republic (CAR) rank fifth and sixth, respectively, from the bottom of the scale. Although such metrics matter, they do not fully capture the relationships between power and territory, or authority and population, in what we call “failed states.” In Roadblock Politics, Schouten provides an alternative account based on local control of bottlenecks alo…
The AU Task Forces
This article examines the Task Forces created by the African Union (AU) to address the security threats posed by Boko Haram and the Lord's Resistance Army (LRA). It argues that these Task Forces are well suited to address transnational armed groups whose ambiguous political goals and extreme violence make traditional conflict resolution ineffective. Although the Task Forces fall within the AU's collective security mandate and broadly within the A…
The Impact of Leadership on Student Outcomes
Purpose: This article illustrates how successful leaders combine the too often dichotomized practices of transformational and instructional leadership in different ways across different phases of their schools’ development in order to progressively shape and “layer” the improvement culture in improving students’ outcomes. Research Methods: Empirical data were drawn from a 3-year mixed-methods national study (“Impact Study”) that investigated asso…
Combining Qualitative and Quantitative Methodologies in Research on Teachers’ Lives, Work, and Effectiveness
The authors of this article discuss how a mixed-methods research team designed and conducted a 4-year study (Variations in Teachers’ Work and Lives and Their Effects on Pupils) that tracked 300 teachers in 100 schools in England over a 3-year fieldwork period. The authors discuss processes that led to new knowledge. Although mixed methods are becoming more popular, few published accounts describe in detail how researchers have moved beyond the us…
