Early Norman Monastic Visitations
Among students of medieval monasticism the province of Rouen has long been famous for a unique record: the archiepiscopal register (Paris, B.N.MS lat. 1245) commonly called the Regestrum visitationum or Journal des visites pastorales of Archbishop Odo Rigaldi, or Eudes Rigaud, which extends from 1248 to 1269. Published first by Theodose Bonnin in 1852, during the past sixty years it has been translated into English, reprinted in Latin and much co…

England and the Roman Curia under Innocent III
The relations of England with the Curia in the thirteenth century is hardly a subject neglected by historians. From A. L. Smith to C. H. Lawrence stretches a long line of scholars who have been concerned during the last sixty years or so with the impact of papal authority on this country in that century. Meanwhile, on the continent, the vast output of studies on papal doctrine and curial machinery elucidate the particular question of England's li…

A recent view of the General Interdict on England, 1208–1214
In recent years there have been several obvious places where an enquirer might learn about the interdict laid by Pope Innocent III on England and Wales. Powicke in the Cambridge Medieval History, Poole in the Oxford History, and Painter in The Reign of King John all described this episode in the history of the English Church and discussed its bearing on political affairs. People who wanted more detail could go to two papers, published in 1948 and…

The so-called Statutes of John Pecham and Robert Winchelsey for the Province of Canterbury
Among the legislators of the medieval English Church John Pecham, archbishop of Canterbury, 1279–92, is remembered chiefly on account of canons published in two councils early in his pontificate, at Reading in July-August 1279 and at Lambeth in October 1281. His successor, Robert Winchelsey (1294–1313), less celebrated for his laws, none-the-less is assigned by Lyndwood, the fifteenth-century canonist, nine chapters of the Provinciale. The ‘Winch…

King John's Reaction to the Interdict on England
Giraldus Cambrensis observed that the interdict laid on England in 1208 inflicted a double wound, involving as it did both the withdrawal of divine service and the plundering of the clergy's possessions. The eagerness of King John in exploiting the situation for his financial profit does not admit of doubt. The estimate of reparations for ablata and dampna arrived at in 1214 was 100,000 marks; this did not satisfy the clergy, and probably the sum…

Decretals of Innocent III in Paris, B.N. MS Lat. 3922A
The Paris manuscript, lat. 3922A of the Bibliothèque Nationale, contains an important group of legal works, written in the early part of the thirteenth century, some of which have in recent years interested historians of the canon law. One section (fols. 118 v -126 v ) has not, to my knowledge, been described fully in print. In 1951, Dr. Walther Holtzmann, who had examined it some years before, kindly brought it to my notice. The bearing of this …
