We utilize duoethnography to help readers better understand the constitutive nature of disability in the contexts of chronic illness and mental health. Employing rhetorical listening, I attend to the ways autistic authors narrate their relationships with objects in blogs/vlogs. Through autoethnographic analysis, I present my personal illness story as a case study in patient consent. In doing so, I explore the complexities that emerge at the intersection of gender and health, including issues of autonomy and choice. Specifically, I reflect on the ideological and systemic factors that contribute to a paradox of consent versus noncompliance in US healthcare contexts.
