Montessori-Based Activities as a Transgenerational Interface for Persons With Dementia and Preschool Children
Montessori-based activities for persons with dementia have been used to successfully provide opportunities for programming between older adults and preschool children in shared site. intergenerational care programs. Such intergenerational programming allows older adults with dementia to fulfill roles of teacher or mentor to younger children or as collaborative workmates for persons with more advanced dementia while providing children with positiv…
On Missing Links and Such
In this article, based on a symposium presented at the Gerontological Society meeting in 1982, several reconceptualizations of adult cognitive development and its relations with everyday problem-solving are presented. From research showing that older adults have little difficulty remembering sentences involving sudden insight, it is suggested that some age-related differences in remembering reflect a higher criterion for deeper semantic processin…
The process of coping with a gross anatomy exam during the first year of medical school
A total of 42 freshman medical students were evaluated before a major exam, after the exam and before grades were announced and after grades were announced. They completed measures relating to mood, emotions, coping, social support and stakes. Significant time and academic performance differences were found in many domains
Age and Living Conditions as Related to Perceptions of Ambiguous Figures
For ambiguous figures, reversing and embedded/hidden subfigures, data were obtained from four groups of 20 subjects each varying in age (young or elderly) and living environments (in college, in the community, and in nursing homes or confined to an institution). 10 men and 10 women were tested in each of the four groups. Dependent measures were the number of reversals passively reported for the Necker cube, the Mach book, the Schroeder staircase …
Self-Report Measures of Depression in College Students
168 college students at two different universities completed the Geriatric Depression Scale and a short form of the Depression Adjective Checklist. There was a significant positive correlation of .67 between scores on the two tests, suggesting that the short form can be used efficiently in research
Factor Analysis of Curiosity Measures in Adults
Factor analyses were conducted of several commonly used questionnaire measures of curiosity in adults. A General Curiosity factor emerged in both total scale and subscale factorings. This factor included the Melbourne State and Trait Personality Questionnaires, the Academic Curiosity Scale, the Ontario Test of Intrinsic Motivation Specific Curiosity subscales, and Spielberger's State and Trait Curiosity Inventories. Rather than measuring curiosit…
Relationship between Experienced Control and Domiciles of Elderly Persons
The authors compared scores on the WAIS and Tiffany Experienced Control Scales for three groups of subjects over 68 years of age, living in a health care facility (Group I), living with or near family members (Group II), and living in their own homes (Group III). Analysis suggests that the amount of control perceived by subjects is validated by their living accommodations. Further support is given to these findings by the comparison of control sc…
Curiosity and Need for Cognition
The present study hypothesized that individuals' need for cognition, which describes the dispositional tendency to engage in and enjoy thinking, would be related to questionnaire measures of curiosity for 148 adults. Scores on the Need for Cognition Scale were correlated with eight commonly used measures of curiosity of adults. With one exception, all values were statisically significant (mean r, .57) and added to the convergent validity of the N…
