Utilizing experiential learning to deliver substance misuse prevention education and impact local communities
This two-year study examined whether an experiential learning course (N = 3) can effectively train Bachelor of Social Work students (N = 61) to provide substance misuse prevention services and make a quantifiable impact on their campus and surrounding community. The results showed that the course effectively trained students to engage in prevention activities with a 97% cumulative class average and an 80% pass rate for engaged students on an inte…
Women’s Reproductive Coercion and Pregnancy Avoidance
This survey study explores patterns of reproductive coercion (RC) and pregnancy avoidance (PA) among women recruited from domestic violence shelters in the southwestern United States ( N = 661). Two logistic regression models assessed the demographic, relationships, and violence characteristics associated with RC and PA. This study provides a close narrative analysis of one man's justification for gaining reproductive control over an intimate partner. Frequent narrative disjunction, or inconsistency within narrative accounts, permeates the subject's description of his intimate relationship. Intimate partner violence (IPV) and sex work have been primarily constructed as mutually exclusive phenomena within scholarly literature, though both can be situated under the umbrella of gender-based violence and traced to male sexual proprietariness. This paper utilizes content analysis to deconstruct depictions of intimate partner violence (IPV) in the music video and lyrics for Eminem's hit single featuring Rihanna, “Love the Way You Lie,” using a composite of six common myth-based beliefs around IPV. Findings indicate that the myths espoused within the music video and lyrics directly and indirectly blame the victim and minimize IPV. There is a need to critically analyze depictions of IPV i…
