Finnish Meadow-Hay Barns in the Lake Superior Region
This study attempts to explain, within an ecological framework, the transplanted haying systems and associated log meadow-hay barns built by immigrant Finns who settled on marginal lands in the Lake Superior region. In general, this region provided a positive environment for the establishment of log meadow-hay barns and haying systems that were functioning in Finland at the time of emigration in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Ojibwa Fisheries on St. Louis River, Minnesota
The westward migration of the Ojibwa Indians from the Sault Ste. Marie area of northern Michigan beginning about 1650, resulted in their widespread dispersal. Those who settled in the coniferous- mixed forest zone of interior Wisconsin and Minnesota adapted to the local conditions by developing an “emphatic” hunting economy, gaining a large share of sustenance from hunting large game and furred animals. Conceptions about house types and construction techniques were part of the cultural baggage of Finnish immigrants who crossed the Atlantic in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Their ideas and practices were either retained, modified or abandoned in the American setting. This study examines the techniques employed and the houses erected by Finnish immigrants who settled the sparsely populated Lake Superior region. The houses manifest aspects…
