Finnish Place Names in Minnesota

ALTHOUGH a considerable number of studies in the American geographical literature have been devoted to various aspects of culture transfer from the Old World to the New, the transplantation of place names, and the naming of places in the New World, by European immigrants have received relatively little attention from American geographers. The handful of American geographers who have deemed place names worthy of investigation have been largely engrossed in mapping generic terms or have ventured to point out the indigenous elements in the New World toponymy.' As geographers we must recognize that place names of European origin belong to the complex of cultural elements in the American scene, and that a geographical analysis of such diverse cultural landscapes cannot afford to omit the origin, form, function, and distribution of place names.2
