Changing Religiosities in the Nordic Countries
From decades-long shifts in state–Church relations to the intimate spiritual journeys of individuals, religious change in the Nordic countries defies simple explanation. This volume advances the Complexity Frame of Reference, a new theoretical framework that enables nuanced analysis of transformation at every level of scale. Together, the fourteen chapters offer a vivid and multifaceted portrait of religious change in the Nordic region, showing h…

Tro, moral og forandring i Indre Mission
The Danish Inner Mission (Home Mission) is a section of The Evangelical Lutheran Church in Denmark (ELCD), but it differs from the dominating church because it, like other evangelical groups, believes that the Bible as God’s written word is true in what it says and IM emphasizes orthodoxy, repentance, activism and attaches central importance the sacrifice of Jesus on the cross. Generational replacement and changes in socialization influence IM's …
High- And Low-Risk Activism
This article presents a quantitative study of differential participation in low- and high-risk activism in the Danish refugee solidarity movement. Distinguishing between low- and high-risk activism, it shows the fruitfulness of combining what are often considered competing theoretical explanations related to (1) values, (2) microstructures, and (3) emotions. We analyze data from a unique survey of 1,856 respondents recruited via Facebook. The res…
Bringing Things Together
The first sample surveys in the latter parts of the 19th century were an intellectual social movement. They were motivated by the intention to improve the economic and political conditions of workers. The quantitative survey was considered an ideal because it would present data about the workers as facts, i.e. establish a scientific authoritative truth. In a case study from Denmark, the paper shows how the first survey - a study of seamstresses -…

The Impact of Economic Deprivation and Regional Differences on Individual Secularization in Western Europe
This article studies secularization at the individual level in a «most similar approach» study of 13 Western European countries. Secularization is measured in two ways: as a decrease in Christian beliefs and as a decrease in the correlation between Christian beliefs and morality. In particular, the article scrutinizes the impact of two factors that are traditionally considered important for secularization: cohort and country. Based on data from t…
A Spiritual Revolution in Denmark
Based on data from the Danish part of the European Values Study 1981–2008, this article explores the validity of the claim for a spiritual revolution as proposed by Paul Heelas and Linda Woodhead. The article suggests an operationalisation of spirituality. The results of the analyses are that religious values—Christian faith as well as spirituality—tend to be stable over an individual's life course. This suggests that, if there is a spiritual rev…

For klimaets skyld
Democracy and denomination
Based on a survey of national minorities (immigrants as well as immigrant descendants) and the national majority, this article analyses the distribution and explanation of democratic values in Denmark. With respect to democratic rights, the analysis shows that Muslim immigrants and immigrant descendants score slightly lower on democratic principles and family democracy; however, they have more democratic values than the majority of the population…
Sekulariseringens mange ansigter
Religion In Europe And The United States
Existing survey evidence shows considerable differences between the United States and countries in Europe. In general terms Americans score higher on religious beliefs and on religious activities, and they are more positive towards mixing religion with politics, there are higher levels of religious belief and church attendance in America, and Americans have a higher level of religious tolerance than Europeans. However, surveys also indicate consi…
Teenage Drinking, Symbolic Capital and Distinction
This article analyses alcohol-related lifestyles among Danish teenagers. Building on Bourdieu's reasoning on symbolic capital and distinction, we analyse three interrelated themes. First, we show that alcohol-related variables (drinking patterns, drinking debut, experience of intoxication, etc.) can be used to identify some very distinctive life styles among groups of Danish teenagers. Second, alcohol experience is analysed as a form of symbolic …

Peter Gundelach and Ester Nørregård-Nielsen: When is one young? The article analyses the making of value boundaries between youth and adulthood based on data from the Danish part of the European Values Survey 1981-1999. Two approaches are discussed - an age perspective and a generation perspective - and the article investigates variations in the values of the population inrelation to work and politics. Multivariate analyses show that the values o…
Visions in Agriculture
Based on theories of social movements, this article is an analysis of the visions of the Presidium of the Danish Agricultural Council, the umbrella organisation for farmers' organisations in Denmark. The research is inspired by Alain Touraine's interventionist sociology. The research shows that the presidium was strongly committed to a productivist worldview, i.e. that the objective is to increase production, lower production costs and get as hig…
Sociologists in Action
In this article, we argue that Alain Touraine's method of intervention is a way of conducting sociological analysis of collective action and social change, but that it must be developed in different ways. We place the intervention method within the context of Touraine's works on social movements and offer a detailed account. Drawing on the works of Pierre Bourdieu and Alberto Melucci we provide the basis for critically engaging with the method. W…
Happiness and Life Satisfaction in Advanced European Countries
Based on the European Value Survey 1999, this article analyzes happiness and life satisfaction in nine rich, industrialized countries with different levels of perceived happiness. Using graphical modeling, the statistical analysis showed that happiness and life satisfaction are related but are different concepts and that contextual as well as individual variables are important in explaining their variations. One of the most important results is t…
Nationel identitet i globaliseringenstid
National Identity in Times of Globalisation Theories of globalisation and individualisation argue that the role of the nation state is diminishing and that consequently national identity is losing importance for the individual. Based on general observations and surveys, this article suggests that national identity is still very important – at least in Denmark. Survey data for Denmark, for instance, shows that national pride has increased during t…

National Value Differences
1. Determinants of values STUDIES OF VALUES have been successful in establishing strong explanatory models of the relation between socio-economic data and values at the individual level. At the level, however, the results have been much less clear. Analyses with countries as the unit often conclude that are major differences which cannot be explained. The European Values Surveys Group (EVSG) had conducted surveys in many European countries around…

Grass roots organizations are a rather recent phenomenon. In the project they are defined as 'local political organizations which seek to influence conditions not related to the working situation of the participants and which have the activity of the participants as their primary resource'. Using this definition, examples of grass roots organizations have been emerging for many years, but the number of organizations has increased very much partic…
Measurement of Influence in Organizations - Critique of the Contol-Graph Method
The control-graph is a method for analyzing the distribution of influence in organizations, which has been developed by A.S. Tannenbaum. The technique has certain methodological assumptions and it is shown that these are not valid in the data, which are analysed in this paper. The aim is to discuss the methodological, but not the theoretical problems of the control-graph, and the paper indicates that the resu:ts of previous control graph studies …

Grass-roots Organizations, Societal Control and Dissolution of Norms
