Amenable Mortality Among Older Brazilians
BackgroundAmenable mortality, deaths preventable through timely and effective healthcare, is a widely used indicator of health system performance, yet evidence is lacking on its individual-level determinants in Brazil.MethodsWe used data from the Brazilian Longitudinal Study of Aging (ELSI-Brazil), a representative cohort of adults aged 50 and older. Deaths were classified as amenable using both the Brazilian and the Pan American Health Organizat…
Evaluating the effect of social mobility on the incidence of HIV/Aids in low-income populations
The control of the HIV/AIDS epidemic remains a significant challenge for public health in Brazil, a country marked by profound social inequalities. In this study, we aimed to use the integration of large data analyses with microsimulation models to evaluate the effect of alternative income-based social mobility policies on AIDS incidence, both in the overall population and in specific vulnerability groups. We created a dynamic microsimulation mod…
Sensitive places, persistent violence
A reflection on 30 years of the Family Health Strategy
A lot can happen in 30 years. In the case of health policy, 30 years is nearly long enough for ideas that were once unpopular to reemerge as popular. While we might like to think these trends in health policy are due to the accumulation of knowledge and best practices, often they are instead driven by changing political winds and priorities 1 .By its very nature, our field is situated within the public realm, and given how closely public health top…
Intersecting inequalities in experiences of violence among Brazilian adults
Existing quantitative studies of violence victimization in Brazil often examine individual demographic and socioeconomic risk factors, limiting insight into how identities can intersect to co-produce vulnerability or resilience. This study uses a nationally representative household survey to investigate how demographic, socioeconomic, and geographic factors intersect to shape the probability of experiencing psychological, physical, and sexual vio…
Improving social determinants of health significantly reduces Aids incidence
Despite progress in addressing HIV/AIDS, the burden remains uneven, especially in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs). Social determinants of health (SDH) significantly influence HIV/AIDS. We studied the impact of SDH inequalities on AIDS incidence in Brazil, a large and diverse LMIC. We used an agent-based model (ABM) to introduce the SDH inequalities of income, education, sex and race in an HIV/AIDS model of 1 172 721 residents in 10 Brazi…

Formative reasons for state-to-state influences on firearm acquisition in the U.S
Results suggest that state policies or programs that reduce gun homicides will also help suppress that state's influence on the patterning of firearm acquisition in other states. Furthermore, states with stricter firearm laws are more likely to influence firearm acquisition in other states, but are themselves shielded from the effects of other states' firearm acquisition patterns. These results inform future research in public health, criminology…
Evolving academic and research partnerships in global health
Building fair, equitable, and beneficial partnerships between institutions collaborating in research in low- and middle-income countries (LMIC) and high-income countries (HIC) has become an integral part of research capacity building in global health in recent years. In this paper, we offer an example of an academic collaboration between the University of California Los Angeles, Center for Health Policy and Research (UCLA CHPR) and the University…
Distinct domains of childhood disadvantage and cognitive performance among older Brazilians
We found that childhood disadvantage is associated with low performance in memory tests and semantic verbal fluency tests among older Brazilians. Adulthood SES fully mediated the association between all domains of childhood disadvantage and memory performance and only partially mediated its association with verbal fluency. Our findings support policy efforts to enhance early childhood development and improve adulthood SES, and guide additional re…

Results: Calculated mortality rates and life expectancy estimates were similar to official statistics for …
Reductions in under-5 mortality and public health improvements of the China Healthy Cities (Counties) initiative
INTRODUCTION: The China Healthy Cities (Counties) public health initiative has been at the forefront of China's efforts to counteract the growing challenges in the urban environment since the 1990s. It primarily focuses on improving the urban living environment. However, the nationwide health impacts of the initiative remain unexplored. METHODS: We constructed nationwide county-level and city-level panel data from 1996 to 2012 using data on under…
Dual Use of Public and Private Health Care Services in Brazil
(1) Background: Brazil has a universal public healthcare system, but individuals can still opt to buy private health insurance and/or pay out-of-pocket for healthcare. Past research suggests that Brazilians make combined use of public and private services, possibly causing double costs. This study aims to describe this dual use and assess its relationship with socioeconomic status (SES). (2) Methods: We calculated survey-weighted population estim…

Meeting the complex challenge of health and social care provision for rapidly-ageing populations
The increasing numbers of people at very old ages pose specific policy challenges for health and social care and highlight the need to rethink established models of service provision. The main objective of this paper is to introduce the concept of “avoidable displacement from home” (ADH). The study argues that ADH builds on and adds value to existing concepts, offering a holistic, person-centered framework for integrated health and social care pr…
