Dialogism in Preservice Teachers’ Rationale of Diverse Texts
Situated within the current sociopolitical landscape of increasing book bans and educational censorship, this study explores how preservice teachers select and advocate for culturally diverse texts within a multicultural children's literature course in Texas. Drawing on Bakhtin's theory of dialogism, the authors analyzed 81 caregiver letters wherein PSTs selected a culturally diverse text for instruction and invited imagined family audiences to e…
Teaching Be like … ’
This grounded theory study explores how teachers in the United States, the United Kingdom, and Portugal express their teacher identities and best-loved selves through Instagram. In each context, our findings suggest that Instagram can amplify or mute these teachers’ best-loved selves, represented by six categories and two cross-cutting themes. The teachers’ best-loved selves are shaped by a variety of contextual, personal, and pedagogical factors…
Preservice Teachers' Conceptualizations of Equity and Equality
Traditionally, preservice teachers (PSTs) have been introduced and socialized to a cartoon of three children attempting to watch a baseball game as the prevailing definition of equity. Yet, in our sociopolitical context where Black, Brown, and LGBTQ+ children are continuously marginalized, we critique whether this simple construction of equity is sufficient. Rather, we build upon these understandings by outlining tenets of critical humanism and e…
More being, different doing
Preparing literacy teachers for culturally relevant teaching is increasingly critical amidst growing student diversity and pandemic‐associated learning needs. However, despite the prevalence of existing reporting on culturally relevant literacy teaching, there remains a disconnect between the theoretical conception and realized implementation of this work in literacy classrooms. Operationalizing the praxis of culturally relevant literacy teaching…
Dispelling Deficit Framing
Our study explored preservice teacher beliefs about enacting culturally relevant literacy instructions in their future classrooms. We surveyed PSTs from one teacher education programme across three cohorts, with one cohort completing both pre- and post-survey responses. Engaging in constant comparative analysis of PSTs’ beliefs about the intersection of student diversity and literacy instruction revealed perspectives along a continuum between equ…
Constructing radical community
Wounded healer
This study narratively untangles an African–American student’s experiences in the throes of receiving a scholarship to study computer science and enter a future Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) career. Using the “wounded healer” metaphor as an interpretative lens, this work explores challenges the young adult experienced relating to his development, culture, contextualized learning, family interactions, religious beliefs, …
Pre-service teachers’ motivations to enter the profession
In this large-scale qualitative study, we use an emergent design to explore pre-service teachers’ (PST) motivations to enter the profession. We open-code 2,798 PSTs responses to the directive, ‘Explain why you decided to become a teacher’, given over the course of a six-year period from one large Texas teacher preparation programme. Using constant comparative analysis, we identified three categories of motivation into the teaching profession: alt…

Match games
This mixed methods study investigates novice teacher and coach survey responses from a two-year induction programme to learn more about what makes a good match. We qualitatively analyse comments from all novice teachers and coaches who were paired across years and find shared themes of structural, professional, and personality similarities as well as the importance of coaching support prominent throughout novice teacher responses. We also use log…
Needed Methodological Emancipation
While qualitative research has been among the more open of academic disciplines, processes for analyzing qualitative data have remained dogmatic. Most qualitative data are “coded” by breaking it into pieces of information that stand alone or through contextualizing it as researchers see fit. Data analysis thus remains a process of deconstructing participant voices and reconstructing stories through sound bites, creating an acceptable form of “fak…
Teacher Candidates’ Developing Beliefs About Diversity and Its Role in Effective Literacy Teaching
This study explored teacher candidates’ understandings of diversity, equity, and equality, and how these beliefs differed throughout teacher preparation. Researchers surveyed teacher candidates at the beginning and at the completion of their program to compare responses to a question inquiring about student demographics in the context of literacy education. Researchers found that teacher candidates’ understandings of effective literacy instructio…
