    Open Access•Michelene T H Chi, Michelene T H et al.•ARTICLE•Cognitive Science•1989

The present paper analyzes the self‐generated explanations (from talk‐aloud protocols) that “Good” and “Poor” students produce while studying worked‐out examples of mechanics problems, and their subsequent reliance on examples during problem solving. We find that “Good” students learn with understanding: They generate many explanations which refine and expand the conditions for the action parts of the example solutions, and relate these actions t…

  • Education and thinking

    Robert Glaser•ARTICLE•American Psychologist•1984•Citada por: 69

Psychological science is obtaining increased understanding of the nature of human thinking and problem solving. This report addresses the question of how this understanding contributes to instructional practices that might foster these higher order abilities. A brief discussion of the implications of past theories for the teaching of thinking introduces a description of a sample of current programs for improving reasoning and problem-solving skil…

  • Categorization and Representation of Physics Problems by Experts and Novices

    Open Access•Michelene T H Chi, T H Michelene et al.•ARTICLE•Cognitive Science•1981

The representation of physics problems in relation to the organization of physics knowledge is investigated in experts and novices. Four experiments examine (a) the existence of problem categories as a basis for representation; (b) differences in the categories used by experts and novices; (c) differences in the knowledge associated with the categories; and (d) features in the problems that contribute to problem categorization and representation.…

  • The future of testing

    Robert Glaser•ARTICLE•American Psychologist•1981

Current research in cognitive and developmental psychology can influence the development of new psychometric methodology. Research on the diagnosis of performance regularities at different levels of learning and development should contribute to assessment measures that provide information useful for instructional decision and guidance. Investigation of the structure and cognitive processes of highly competent performers in various knowledge domai…

  • Trends and Research Questions in Psychological Research on Learning and Schooling

    Robert Glaser•ARTICLE•Educational Researcher•1979•Citada por: 1•Referencias: 6

For many psychologists interested in educational phenomena, the boundaries between basic and applied research are becoming increasingly blurred. Examination of recent work on the nature and development of human knowledge and intellectual skills makes it apparent that research now being directed toward educationally relevant areas is both fundamental in character and, at the same time, directed toward practical understanding. A corrective interact…

In this paper, I propose to show how certain developments in psy-chology have influenced present educational methods, and to show further how recent work in learn-ing theory, developmental psychol-ogy, and psychometrics strongly suggests new directions for educa-tional research and practice. I shall discuss this theme in the context of a central problem in education — the individualization of instruction or, in other terms, adapting educa-tional …
