Un(usual) crisis
This article analyses how care workers, employed in the care sector in Poland and the USA, coped with their experiences of the COVID-19 pandemic in their life histories and whether and how they retrospectively normalised it (i.e. “tamed”it by the use of various biographical resources). The article considers four meanings of normalisation: the return to normality, the invisibility of chronic crises, the institutionalisation of innovations, and the…
Opór pracowniczy, zarządzanie algorytmiczne i zbiorowe stosunki pracy w Amazon Polska
Power resources and grassroots activism
In the context of debates about logistics as a critical infrastructure of contemporary capitalism, this article addresses the question of the conditions under which workers’ structural power can be translated into the organisation of collective interests. Based on original empirical research (30 interviews) in online food delivery and logistic centres in Poland, the article argues that ‘organising potential’ is greater in the latter. This finding…
Managing intersectional precarity in times of the Covid-19 pandemic
The article explores how essential workers in health, social care, education and logistics in Poland coped with precarity during the COVID- 19 pandemic in relation to their intersectional identities and experiences of inequality. Inspired by Fritz Schütze’s biographical sociology and intersectional research on work organisations, it develops a concept of biographical resources, understood as the tacit knowledge and skills that individuals use to …
Critical labour studies and labour movements in the east of Europe
Poland has a long tradition of cooperation between intellectuals and the labour movement, as well as organic intellectuals within the labour movement, which manifested itself during the workers’ and citizens’ struggles against authoritarian socialism. However, this legacy has weakened in the 1990s during the period of neoliberal economic restructuring, supported by part of the former anti-communist opposition. In this article, I document some tra…
Radical research perspectives, network and collective
Critical Labour Studies (CLS) was established in 2004 as a collective to provide a platform for co-operative and radical research and education. Within the academy the network spans the social sciences in the field of work and employment, but this is only one of its characteristic features. It also includes a range of activists well beyond the academy in both traditional and alternative social and labour movements. The meetings also bring togethe…

Becoming a young radical right activist
With the increasing popularity of the radical right, much research has tried to explain the motives of voters. Less attention has been paid to the motives of people to become radical right activists - specifically young people, a group with a high tendency to join right-wing parties. Within the context of the internationalisation of the radical right, this article draws on 28 narrative interviews conducted between 2019 and 2021 with young radical…

Authoritarian innovations in the Polish industrial relations
The article addresses the problem of ‘authoritarian innovations’ in labour governance in Poland, understood as new government practices that maintain the semblance of social dialogue while limiting the influence of unions. Unlike most studies that analyse authoritarian practices since the right-wing Law and Justice Party came to power in Poland in 2015, this analysis takes a longer historical perspective. Drawing from Ost's thesis of ‘illusory co…
Pandemic as a Biographical Turning Point? The Experiences of the Covid-19 Pandemic in the Biographies of “Essential Workers”
This article aims to answer the question of the biographical meaning of the pandemic in the experiences of so-called “essential workers” who performed their duties in the first line of struggle with the consequences of the COVID-19 health crisis. The analysis of workers’ experiences helps us contribute to the ongoing debates on the role of macro-level events in autobiographical storytelling and the discussion on biographical turning points in soc…
Biographical Work as a Mechanism of Dealing with Precarity and Precariousness
The article aims to explore the relationship between biographical work and the strategies of managing precarity (low-paid and unstable employment) and precariousness (insecurity and instability of life conditions in general) in Poland’s new capitalism. Poland witnessed the rise of precarity during the entire capitalist transformation after 1989, while the expansion of precarious, temporary, and non-standard employment accelerated in the first tw…
Unilateral crisis prevention and crumbling social partnership in Poland
In this chapter, we examine the dynamics of social dialogue in Poland after 2008. Two unique circumstances are highlighted: the absence of economic recession in Poland and turbulent changes in social concertation. It is argued that the long-lasting deficiencies of the Polish industrial relations were temporarily overcome in 2008–2009 as the result of a fear factor (anticipated economic breakdown) as the main motive for social partners to exert pr…
Precarity as a Biographical Problem? Young Workers Living with Precarity in Germany and Poland
In the context of debates on the meanings of precarious employment, this article explores the varied ways young workers in Poland and Germany are managing precarity. Biographical narrative interviews with 123 young people revealed four different ways interviewees experienced precarity. These different approaches reflected varied ways in which interviewees were orientated to work, the meanings attributed by them to precarious employment and the ma…
The Moral Boundary Drawing of Class
This article explores the relational and moral aspects of the perception of class structure and class identifications by young people in objectively vulnerable labour market conditions in Poland and Germany. Drawing on 123 biographical interviews with young people in both countries, it demonstrates that young precarious Poles and Germans tend to identify themselves against the 'middle class' - understood variously in the two countries - and attri…
Young People, Precarious Employment and Nationalism in Poland
This article explores the relevance of economic and cultural (identity-based) factors in the emergence of nationalist sentiments among young people in Poland. It discusses the changing labour market situation of young workers, involving their precarisation and critically reviews existing accounts of new nationalism in Poland. In the body of the article, based on the analysis of biographical narrative interviews with young nationalist activists an…
Who Is a Right-Wing Supporter? On the Biographical Experiences of Young Right-Wing Voters in Poland and Germany
This article explores the selected cases of the biographies of right-wing supporters from a larger sample of narrative interviews with young (18-35 years old) people in Poland and Germany. In the existing literature, we can find the socio-economic explanations of the sources of the right-wing turn (related to economic deprivation, precarisation, social exclusion, labor market competition with immigrants and others), as well as cultural explanatio…

Worker agency and trade union renewal
Contrary to predictions of continued weakness of the union movement in post-socialist countries of Central and Eastern Europe, in recent years Polish trade unions have undertaken various revitalisation attempts, including campaigns to organise unions in the private sector. Although the existing literature accounts for this internal union transformation by referring to macrosocial and institutional factors, this article suggests that the emerging …
Unionism and Workers' Strategies in Capitalist Transformation
This article reassesses recent debates on labour weakness in Central and Eastern Europe after the end of `actually existing socialism', examining the relationship between workers' life strategies and the development of trade unionism in Poland. Biographical interviews with workers reveal three distinct patterns of coping with social change, structural conditions and their relationship to workers' activity in unions. It is suggested that recent si…
