The associations of code reform zoning and activity-oriented zoning with neighborhood social connectedness in the U.S., including mediation by walkability and park coverage
OBJECTIVE: Zoning codes influence the built environments of communities in the United States (U.S.), which in turn have potential to promote social connections. This study assessed associations between code reform zoning (CRZ) and activity-oriented zoning (AOZ) exposure and perceived neighborhood social connectedness and whether these associations were mediated by walkability and park coverage. Pediatric Primary Care Physicians’ Perceptions of, and Processes for, Pediatric Blood Pressure Screening, Follow-Up, and Hypertension Management
Background/Objectives : Pediatric hypertension is an important and impactful condition. The 2017 American Academy of Pediatrics clinical practice guidelines provide recommendations for identifying and managing this condition within primary care. However, the perspectives and self-described practices of physicians are largely absent in the current evidence base. We aim to fill this gap through our qualitative investigation of physicians' perceptio…
The association between multimorbidity and food insecurity among US parents, guardians, and caregivers
Our findings suggest a higher risk of food insecurity in parents with multimorbidity. Parents with multimorbidity (especially those with comorbid depression and anxiety disorders) may be a key population to identify and intervene on food insecurity to improve health and well-being among US families
Lessons Learned in Developing a Model for Academic–Community Partnered Rapid Qualitative Research
We believe this model can be used by teams to conduct community-academic partnered research that will advance health equity by incorporating lived experience and professional expertise of community partners
A Flexible Framework for Urgent Public Health Climate Action
Climate change poses profound threats to human safety, health, and well-being. Public health agencies, especially state, territorial, local, and Tribal health departments, can play an essential role in climate change adaptation and mitigation. Public health climate action can protect health, promote health equity, and increase climate change resilience. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has updated its original climate and health fra…
Health Care Workers’ Perspectives on Collecting Sexual Orientation and Gender Identity in the Adult Primary Care Setting
BACKGROUND: Despite numerous calls for standardized collection of sexual orientation and gender identity (SOGI) data in clinical settings, uptake of this practice still lags. OBJECTIVES: This study conducted a preimplementation assessment of staff attitudes toward SOGI data collection within an adult primary care practice in an urban academic medical center in the northeastern United States. RESEARCH DESIGN: We created a process map of the flow o…
Effects of Teacher Training and Continued Support on the Delivery of an Evidence-Based HIV Prevention Program
Background Few studies have investigated the effects of teacher training and continued support on teachers’ delivery of evidence-based HIV prevention programs. We examined these factors in a national implementation study of an evidence-based HIV risk reduction intervention for adolescents in the sixth grade in the Bahamas. Methods Data were collected from 126 grade 6 teachers and 3,118 students in 58 government elementary schools in the Bahamas i…
Reimagining the Role of Health Departments and Their Partners in Addressing Climate Change
Public health departments have important roles to play in addressing the local health impacts of climate change, yet are often not well prepared to do so. The Climate and Health Program (CHP) at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) created the Building Resilience Against Climate Effects (BRACE) framework in 2012 as a five-step planning framework to support public health departments and their partners to respond to the health impac…

Healthy Eating and Physical Activity Policy, Systems, and Environmental Strategies
Background: Policy, systems, and environmental (PSE) approaches can sustainably improve healthy eating (HE) and physical activity (PA) but are challenging to implement. Community health improvement plans (CHIPs) represent a strategic opportunity to advance PSEs but have not been adequately researched. The objective of this study was to describe types of HE and PA strategies included in CHIPs and assess strategies designed to facilitate successful…

Spirituality and Physical Activity and Sedentary Behavior among Latino Men and Women in Massachusetts
This study found that individuals who are more spiritual are also less sedentary, and this association was stronger in men than women. Findings provide insight for developing future interventions to promote activity in this high-risk population, which has been greatly understudied. Future research endeavors should consider investigating the impact of spirituality-based messages to reduce sedentary behavior among Latinos
Psychometric Development of the Research and Knowledge Scale
BACKGROUND: Many research participants are misinformed about research terms, procedures, and goals; however, no validated instruments exist to assess individual's comprehension of health-related research information. We propose research literacy as a concept that incorporates understanding about the purpose and nature of research. OBJECTIVES: We developed the Research and Knowledge Scale (RaKS) to measure research literacy in a culturally, litera…

Challenges to Research in Urban Community Health Centers
Community health centers (CHCs) are important settings for research aimed at reducing health disparities. However, CHCs pose many challenges to research at patient, provider, and system levels. We summarized lessons learned from a multimethod, formative study to develop intervention strategies for improving colorectal cancer screening in CHCs, and make recommendations for future research. The call for research in “real world” settings such as CHC…

Linkage to Medical Services in the Drug Abuse Treatment Outcome Study
BACKGROUND: An episode of substance abuse treatment is an opportunity to link substance-abusing patients to medical care at a time when management of medical problems might stabilize recovery and long-term health. However, little is known about the ability of organizational linkage mechanisms to facilitate the delivery of medical care to this population. OBJECTIVES: The goal of this study was to examine whether organizational linkage mechanisms f…

BACKGROUND: Abortion is one of the most common surgical procedures performed on women in the United States, and its safety has been demonstrated. Little research has focused, however, on women's reports and ratings of the service. OBJECTIVES: This study explored the association of demographic factors, medical outcomes, and client ratings of service dimensions with global satisfaction. RESEARCH DESIGN: For this cross-sectional study, permission to…
Classification and regression tree analysis in public health
BACKGROUND: Audience segmentation strategies are of increasing interest to public health professionals who wish to identify easily defined, mutually exclusive population subgroups whose members share similar characteristics that help determine participation in a health-related behavior as a basis for targeted interventions. Classification and regression tree (C&RT) analysis is a nonparametric decision tree methodology that has the ability to effi…
